i-phone unlocking

My boss brought one back from New York, needs unlocked for use in the UK, anyone know how?

you can do it but the automatic update form apple will disable the phone completely. unfortunately, and i dont think you can disable the update, there was a big thing about it in the news, its a ploy by apple and certain networks to keep you locked into extortionate tariffs.

but you could try apple i suppose

He should have waited until next month where you can buy an unlocked iphone from France.

France will be the only country in the world selling unlocked iphones as its against their laws to sell phones which are locked to carriers.

As posted, updates are automatic and will makes the phone dead. 02 have got the deal on this phone in the UK and any unlocked ones in the UK will getthe same fate.....

Although im sure we will see some hacks at some point!

Well I have no personal experience, but from what I have extensively read, you certainly can unlock it using older firmware, and you *don't* have to upgrade to the new firmware. You can happily keep it on the old one. There's a new jailbreak out for the new firmware now anyhow. And Apple are going to make the unlocked French Iphone only display a french language OS. Basically if you actually want all the usuability and enjoyment out of one with having to worry about not constantly blocking firmware, repatching it all the time and other wretched tasks, just buy one from O2!

Updates are NOT automatic !!

If Itunes offers to update your phone ... say no.. job done.

infact just go into itunes preferences and disable check for updates.

There is now a class-action lawsuit against apple in the US because it is illegal for providers to lock their phones to one carrier.

Didn't know the french ones would be unlocked. Might have to make a trip across - just a shame they aren't 3G.

You can unlock any iPhone upto the most recent firmware version. The v1.1.1 problem was fixed within a week of the update been issued. The UK handsets will probably run v1.1.2 which will not be hacked immediately but I imagine it will not take long.
