I want my old car back

I will also say the 182 can still scare me at times, you can carry alot of speed through bends and seriously hassle much MUCH faster cars.

and 182s and the like are so better?!

Yes.
Hence why i have one.

Ive driven CTR's Lovely engine great build quaity.

No soul.
The handling is really safe and the steering is terrible.

In the 182 you feel everything, it tells you everything.
Still sticks a smile on my face 3 years down the line.

CTR's are so boring.
lol
i need to be stimulated.
at the minute i feel like taking the bus, and thats from somone who thinks their a genuine petrolhead.

Hmm never met anyone who prefered a 1.4 clio to a renaultsport clio, but then everyone is different!

Going on what everyone else has said about the Civic Type-R though, you would hate that more as its not as good at being chucked about as a RS clio and you have even less midrange oomph too. Thats not to say once you in 'the zone' its not a good car. Well the K20 engine certainly is the best thing about the car, lightyears ahead of the F4R.

with small engines u get the feeling of going fast cos u have to rev the knackers off them, when u buy a bigger engined car u just cant be bothered because its too easy :)

As I've said many times on here both the CTR and 172/182 are great cars for what they are. Still, the CTR wins it for me lol

I reckon you've just been so used to a car you could keep for foot planted for too long mate, and you probably had good tyres on your old car too i'm guessing, so they handled what power it had really really well. I always drove my 1.2, foot flat to the floor too lol

It sounds stupid to say you have to learn how to drive a better car, but I went from a 1.2 to my 2.0 and although it was clearly loads quicker off the mark and top end etc it felt really nervy but that was only really because you forgot how much quicker you are going compared to before. Even 5-10 mph into a bend can make a shed load of difference, especially you, you maniac :D

I'd really really recommend getting into a 1.4 Clio, taking it for a burn on a road, then doing the same with the RS now, once you make the step back down, you realise what a huge difference there is

I never started to really have fun in my car for weeks and weeks, it felt really twitchy etc, but now it just feels so solid and planted, also when you are driving you don't really feel speed properly, get one of your mates to take you for a spin lol  ( I did )

Hope you get your enthusiasm back anyway mate ;)

I think its a confidence thing. Im so used to my clio I can chuck it down a country lane and have alot of fun, I know its limits it feels nimble and it still easily gets to 3 figure license losing speeds. I just think you are missing the character and relationship you built up with GIMPO and you need to get on a track day to explore the limits of the RS.
That fuel economy sounds crap though, I get 120 miles to a tenner on the 1.2 16v and I dont drive slow.
Have you driven another 172 back to back with yours? You did Hpi it?

f**k knows, im off to bed. maybe the car will go abit faster tomorrow.
......*awaits "i just wrote my 172 off" thread*

think i need mine checked out lol i only get about 200 to £40!

Im scared to open the bonnet on mine at the moment or touch anything as it seems really nippy and is returning such good mpg. Mind you I hadn't driven it for two days when I drove it earlier this evening, always makes it seem faster.

 its about 5 quid for a gallon or near enough ....... so 60 mpg :quiet:

Well I did about 20 miles on the light so it was definatly empty, stuck a tenner in and set the trip as I always do, probably did 15 miles on the light and it was 117 miles on the trip, I dont tend to fill up until the lights on constantly. When I first got it though i have had as low as 70 miles from £10.

they do feel faster when you dont drive them for a while. i was stuck with our 55 plate 1.2 16v dynamique for a week and when i went back to mine it felt rapid for 10 minutes lol then it was back to being slow again!

my shite mpg is probably due to mine spitting all the petrol out the powerflow in pops and bangs lol

this month matey

1600 16v
stainless tubular manifold, decat, 2.0 throttle body, headwork, manifold work, then eventually cams and lightned and balanced.

somethin a bit different from 2.0 conversion.

I have wanted a 172 for some time now, about 4 years to be exact.
so a few weeks ago i bought one and chopped in my 1.4 16v which had served me for the best part of 100,000 miles.

firstly i noticed that yes it was faster than my 1.4.
i've had it on some long motorway type cruises and its turning out about 33mpg which dissapoints me as im driving really slow with it.

at speed the car drinks petrol where as the old car did 33mpg flat out all the time. the old car also cornered better, it was more stable and i felt confident with it.

so on the whole im tottally disapointed with my 172, even diesel bmws have ago at overtaking, and i just let them past as i cant be arsed stopping to fill up. i feel tottally demoralised.

normally id race anything and everything. i wanted to be first everywhere. its not even comfortable, my old seats were better and that was on a car lowered on crap springs on original shocks.

either im having a mid life crisis as 23, or this car is tottally overrated.
maybe i like being the underdog. the speeds become boring now, its not even THAT fast, i wanted the road to be dug up when i accelerated, all i get is rattles and fuel lights.

its not that i cant afford it, its cheeper on insurance than my 1.4 due to having no mods.

someone help me get into this car!!!

Unlucky....your obviously not driving it properly.

Fuel consumption bad in the RS?.....you try driving a modded turbo car which does sub 20mpg most of the time!

Why did you buy this particular 172? surely you test drove it and if you didnt like it, then why buy it?

i hope your right. even though i know from a meet we had a few weeks ago i could carry loads more speed through a series of motorway roundabouts than a 182, so much so i was up the arse of the 182 to the top of 3rd b4 it even started to pull anything.

i just wanna take it back at the minute.

You must have had the fastest 1.4 Clio in histroy if a 182 couldnt pull away from you until 90mph (top of 3rd) as a 182 will hit a 100 from a standstill at least 15secs faster than a 1.4

  clio 172
My first post here as only got my 172 on saturday x reg (2000) 42,000, full history 4 news tyres and completley bog standard, £3,700 and I have to agree with the op here the 172 does not feel very quick at all, i was expecting it to go much better than my old car (standard saxo VTS) but it don't handle as well or seem any quicker, in fact it feels slower, don't get me wrong it's not that slow but it can hardly re regarded as a 'fast car', my mates astra 1.8 is as quick so i don't understand all the fuss you lot seem to make about these cars as so far it seems s**t

and yes I did test drive it but you don't really get a full feeling for a motor from a quick drive.

you misread what i put, i meant i was able to carry so much speed through a series of corners the 182 wasnt able to pull away untill we got on a straight.
so i was doing say 50 leaving the bends and the 182 was doing 35. so i was able to carry the same speed from 50 -100 in the same time a 182 could do 35 - 100. not actual figures but somthing like that!

i know people aint gonna wanna hear all this, yes i test drove it. i didnt really give it any stick, just a few quick bursts and it seemed fast. but thats worn off now.

Same thing here mate.....i think it's way over hyped, will be getting rid of mine to get somthing decent with a bit of go

Don't understand why so many people at the moment think their 172s are slow, mine still feels rapid after 18month of spirited driving.

I find the more I drive the 172 the more I get used to it's handling/cornering abilities so it's still plenty of fun.

Two of my mates own 200sx monsters. One is running 240bhp and one 260bhp. Neither can beat me around the twisties. I know what you are saying mate as I wasn't blown away by the speed of the 172 but it is still fast and affordable.
If you want serious speed then petrol is riddick! My mates can barely get 200 miles to a full £50 tank of fuel. I think you should sell up and get something with a turbo tbh.

  182
I can understand what he means to a certain point. Now I've got my 182 I don't feel as confident in pushing it in the corners as I was in my 1.2. But that was lowered and didn't have any roll to it. And you could just put your foot to the floor and it wouldnt acelerate too much. I am now getting more used to the 182 and can push it further, think a track day would help alot as you can learn the limits safely. I don't think it feels slow though.

  Clio 172 mk2
A lot of it is in the head

My old Impreza felt quick as fook due to the turbo coming in (lag) but I reckon I can corner as quick in the Clio due to the cars good steering feel & handling.
