Ice hockey

  White APE
Tried taking a few pics (turned out to be a few hundred) of the ice hockey the other night. Turned out to be alot harder then i imagined although i knew it wouldnt be easy. Was shoot through smeary plexi glass so that did help for starters. The iratic speed and movements of the players also made it more challenging.

Pics turned out quite noisey as had to use ISO of 800 most of the time in order to get a resonable shutter speed.

C&C Welcome

To me they don't look very sharp. Love the black and white one of the referees helmet, nice arty shot good composition.

I like the black and white close up of the ref. Like you say, just a shame you needed the high ISO as its a bit grainy..

  White APE
Totally agree on how grainy they are. Quite annoyed. But thats all part of learning i suppose. It was my first attempt at photographing anything moving too.

Any tips for future attempts?

Really tough conditions to get good shots in. I really like the shot with the refs helmet too.

Most people who shoot indoor sports use a minimum of a f2,8 lens, aside from buying faster glass or the use of a powerful flash if you weren't behind the perspex, I wouldn't know what to recommend for any future events.

Camera is D60 with 55-200m VR lens. Think faster glass is need really. Might have another go at some point from upstairs to atleast get away from the plexi.

I've experimented with inline hockey lots.
Shot this lot the other day: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mahoosive/sets/72157613661294034/

Used ISO 2000 and somewhere around 1/125 shutter. aperture was lowest possible!

Bracknell yeah? Ask if you can stand behind the players benches on a step-ladder. That's how they shoot at Guildford anyhow!
It also helps if you know alot about the sport - luckily enough i've played hockey for years so can predict what's gonna happen...

the good old john nike center lol! used to go there on a friday night  was this the game where the streaker fell over and got an ice burn? it was in the sun lol

  White APE
HAHA no it wasnt Ryan, i hadnt heard about that! Im down there most weeks tbh. went to away game at Guildford once and thought the facilities for away fans was crap so we're never going back there. lol

mrmahoosive ~ how come your pics arent really noisey with an ISO so high?

  Nikon D700
no idea actually! Just set it to 2000 and shot away...

the light where i shot them was rubbish too... guess it's just the D90 handling ISO really well.

  White APE
Well i had another go tonight. Still pics were not too great but i definately learned more tonight so can use that for future attempts. Dont think ive chosen the best subjects to learn to pan on though.

Well here's some of them, all direct from cam so no fiddling in PS.
