Idle / Revs problem, Help needed.

Hi, I have developed an issue with my 182 today and was hoping for some advice.

My car passed an M.O.T two weeks ago and things seemed healthy.Whilst sitting with the car idling the revs increased to approx 3000rpm whilst not in gear and without accelerating and would not return to its normal 1000rpm. The engine sounded a lot louder than normal and the erratic idle was easily noticable. After turning on and off the ignition the problem was still there and the car is idling now around 2000rpm.

I have taken the car to two local garages today to be looked at, the first said it had no fault codes but could be a possible dephaser fault. The second (a Renault specialist) also advised had no fault codes but did say the throttle body was full of grease and cleaned it up. They advised the problem was solved and the car was running fine.

After collecting it the idle is still erratic and jumping between 1000 and 2000rpm. I have also found that when trying to accelerate past 3000rpm the revs seem to stick and feels like a loss of power. Also noticed on a couple or occasions when reaching 4000rpm the revs would stop and then fall to 3000rpm again feeling like a loss of power.

Really lost on where to go with this now as after searching a lot of threads they point to throttle sensor faults but this had been dismissed by both garages and no fault codes had been found. Unfortunatley after collecting / driving the car it was too late to return to the garage as they had closed for the day so will be speaking with them tomorrow although they seemed fairly insistant there was no further problems and without a fault code unable to find anything else wrong.

Was hoping someone may have had a similair experience or could advise on any other known problems so i would at least have a few ideas when speaking with them tomorrow. Appologies if i make no sense but any advice would be greatly appreciated as im rather lost on what the problem could be.

Sounds like the TB itself is on the way out.

Ahh rite :( was only replaced february 2011, do they have a short lifetime ?

Was a bit worried at first when the first garage said it was the dephaser as he could hear rattling and thought it was causing the timing to be out. The second garage seemed to think it was more based towards the throttle body than the belts/dephaser (they were the ones that changed them a year ago).

They don't fail that much really. Strange a fault hasn't shown though. Take it to a specialist on here and get the to look over it. Where you based?

In Middlesbrough mate, right up in the north east near Newcastle. I think im a long way away from any of the recommend specialists on here unfortunatley. My local specialist here just seem to have dismissed it more than anything with it not showing any faults. Bit lost as to how to convince them otherwise now, i thought it was really noticable but then i do notice problems more with driving it day in day out.

Jay, there's problem number 1... Like most garages, the people you've taken it to are complete muppets who "code read" which does nothing apart from give you a start point from which to start looking from and without a code they're incapable of doing any work (because in truth, they don't know what they're doing). What you actually need is a diagnostic session and using the vehicles live data alone will pretty much resolve this issue.

To me it sounds like either a programming fault or a simple induction leak and I'd recommend you take it somewhere with access to CLIP. It could even be a pedal fault but these normally flag an error code.

Drive down to see Mick if you can mate. He'll see you right.

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. Funny you say actually the first garage i took it to said it came up with a pedal switch fault but then disregarded that and said they thought it was the dephaser so im wondering if that may be the issue with you saying the same. Its back off to the garage tomorrow but if its not resolved then i will look into that, dont think your too far away.
