Idle trouble, Engine cutting out, Temperature gauge playing up.

  Renault Clio
Hi Guys,

Im new to this, so dont get mad if this is an obvious problem!

I currently drive a 2006 1.2 Clio Campus Sport, (37000 miles, last service at 30000) and this week have encountered some problems with it.

The engine will start from cold absolutely fine, but a few times this week about 5minutes into drive I have run into the same problem;

The Engine suddenly starts to over rev by itself, up to and around 2500-3000 rpm.
The Temperature gauge, goes completely dead, as if the Engine itself has lost all heat from the engine.
If I tried to apply my foot on the accelerator, the revz will drop all the way down to about 800rpm where the engine will either 1) cut out or 2) spike back up drastically back to 2500rpm.

If the engine cuts out, and I usually have a little trouble restarting the engine, the key will turn and the ignition lights will come on, and the engine will begin to fire up, but then keep cutting out. Usually after a few trys the engine will start again.

Does anybody know anything obvious that this might be? I took it to a local garage to have a quick look under the bonnet and they couldnt see anything obvious. If its something simple I can do myself that might save me some money, otherwise Im going to have to take it for a service and get it diagnostic checked!

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Sounds alot like the TDC sensor mate, it may need inspected/cleaned up!

I'd also have the earth straps inspected aswell
