I'm lovin it.....

  Clio 1970000000
Picked up my Clio 197 today and have already done 150 miles (40 of them was because I went the wrong way home from picking it up:S)

I was a bit worried as this was my first french car. I normally buy German or Jap but the build quality seems fine. There is a dodgy light in the dash and a rattle in the passenger door that are being done under warranty tomorrow but none of this matters as the car is such good fun.

I have had 200bhp for many years (turbo or vtec) and was worried that the clio would feel slow, especially as many reviews say that the car is quick but doesn't feel it, but the engine is a gem. Not much below 3000rpm, then it comes alive and by 6000 rpm we are in the zone. Having owned a CTR, I found it very easy to get used to driving the clio.

And here is the intersting bit, I was thinking of getting a CTR Premier (the best engine & gearbox combo in the world unless you have very deep pockets, bomb proof build, Recaros etc etc etc) but do not have a single regret. I love the looks of the 197 (I did get it in the best colour...Nimbus Grey) and even more than that, I love the rarity of it. I have only seem 2-3 other 197s and 1 200 around. I love the standard seats and all the other toys that make driving it an experience.

I took the kids out in it this afternoon and they love it too (faster daddy, faster:S:S:S).

I am converted

The thing about buying French is that they have always had first class engineering. It just goes wrong when they try and build it. I did alot of research and the phase 3 clio is a big step in the right direction.

I'm happy to sacrifice some of the thrills for a overall better product but then my age does start with a 4 not a 2!!!

It's Seb's old car. Not sure if there are any pics already around and I will get some up soon.

Sebs old car was a gem ! glad you're enjoying it.

I don't think I could go to a big german barge  I'm addicted to french hatches.

OP: how does the torque delivery compare with the CTR?

The 197 has more torque that the CTR (about 10-15 extra IIRC) and it shows lower down the rev range. There is a noticable pull in the 197 at 3000 rpm that the CTR didn't have. VTEC kick is a great experience and the sound of the Honda engine is amazing so I was expecting to be a little dissapointed with the 197 but it pulls really hard to the red line and doesn't ever feel like its running out of puff.

Maybe I have a particually good car but I honestly don't feel that this engine is inferior to the CTR.

IIRC, it was the best Nimbus 197 in the country. Had it's own trophy and eve-ry-thing.

Glad you're enjoying it fella.
