Was he ok?

The airbags will only deploy under certain conditons, if there is no passenger the airbag wont go off on that side.

Airbags arent always nice when they deploy, if the speed is too low it could be very painful.

it was 40 and was a violent impact apparently

he only has a couple of bruises and whiplash luckily but was a serious accident. luckily there was a witness as the lorry driver didnt stop, got the lorry plate tho. he jus pulled into the lane without indicating and sideswipped the clio

Sounds like the impact wasnt enough for the airbags to go off

Did he have his seat belt on? Dont the airbags say SRS or something similar meaning they dont deploy if the seat belt isnt in? If he did have it on, could be a fault in the seat belt part.

Glad hes OK.

Do an internet search. Airbags dont save lives. They were invented for the American market because they dont wear seat belts so often there. An aig bag with a seat belt is next to useless. If your worried about side swiping get a 4x4.

If airbags worked effectively in any way they would be on formula one cars. But as the drivers wear seat belts they are not needed.

an air bag with a seat belt is not useless. It stops you hitting the steering, dash etc, and it reduces the rate of deceleration on your head/upper bod, slowing it more gradually.

Im sure there are many reasons F1 cars dont have airbags; them being useless I doubt is the reason (the merc Touring car racers have them, for instance)

They were tested. airbags are not effective on f1 cars purely because of the forces involved.

The hans device is far more affective in such cars that produce such forces

Euro spec bags are not to be confused with us spec air bags (much much larger) As euro airbags offer fantastic head protection in the right type of accident/crash. This wasnt one of those situations so the airbags werent deployed.

Noooo.

the us size is changing from airship to party balloon.

To be honest mose bags are now 2/3 stage anyway so they inflate according to the accident.

Some us bags were huge, thats being changed over time.

The worrying thing is that the explosives only have a shelf life of ten years.

Oh dear.

The airbags are also only great if you are within certain height limits, if youre to short and it smacks only the top part of your head, too tall and your head will go over the top of the bag as it impacts you - also the charge that goes off can give some serious burns - although these are ok if it has just saved your life.

A side-swipe of the car would not have an impact of 40+mph, just no way the lorry could make that sort of speed sideways.

I agree this is often due to incorrect seat adjustment.

Again with you on that one.
