impressed with a 1.2

  Coupe/Defender V8
My old man owns a campus and I have to say the 1.2 lump is quite nippy. So much so infact he prefers driving it on the motorway to his 56 plate 1.8 Focus. Which I can understand as the thing weighs 6 times as much as the campus :|

Great first cars...probably would have killed myself if i had anything faster when i started driving

Iv kind of forgot what they are like to drive though and how slow they actually are

lol, a focus 1.8 is a much better/faster car than a 1.2 clio will ever be.
1.2 might be okay as a 1st car (or curtisy car!)but thats about it

Oi that 1.2 8v is gna be up ur arse this sunday

also my 1.2 8v beats most 1.2 16v around here :approve:

They wouldn't have been trying.

I know its comical a 1.2 16v owner pulling rank over a 1.2 8v owner, but seriously, the 8v is just dangerous!

the 1.2 16vs go well for what they are

  182
He does make ground on it, and having been to EA airfield meets and racing timmay and them i know too well he could have overtaken it, but its the principle. You all **** them off so much that you make it sound like on track you could go round one whilst driving like a sunday driver. Listen to the 172, hes trying! Tyre squeal and all!!

i had a major problem with my 1.2 drove it down to pick my new 172 up long drive on the motorway, but i was that impressed with its handling, fuel, comfort, and tiny bit of power it has i was debating if to get the 172! stupid i know but at the time i didnt want to waste money as i was just in my new job but all good now still got the 1.2 and a 172 but they feel miles apart when you get in either one of them

i'll just insert the famous Pirelli phrase here, "power is nothing without control"

Profound, Fred.

I'm not slagging the 1.2's but this video doesn't prove anything. And yes, Sport owners think their cars are fast as fook, but then so do a lot of 1.2 owners, so same rules apply. Whilst both are fun, that's where the performance camparisons stop. They are light years apart. IMO.

Can't complain about mine. Keeps up with my friends mk1 1.6 focus with no worries. by no means is the focus standard either. Great first car! I know its not a super car but makes driving fun enough.

I do miss my 1.2 16v :(
My 1.4 is so boring to drive and rag about in comparison.

Thats probably because Peugeot make awful cars. The last good car they made was the 106 GTI, all the previous GTI's where also awsome of course.

You need to get back into a Clio mate.

  306 GTI-6
I love my Pug, but then again its a GTI.

I suppose the 1.2s are nippy in the lower gears, but, my 1.6 would piss all over them, so I imagine a 172 etc would do so even more.

Having said all that, fun vs cost, they must be great, as you can rag them and still get reasonable mpg.

306 GTI's are an awsome car.

With regards to decent mpg I don't so much agree, i'd average 37mpg in the 1.2 around town and 31mpg in the 172. On the motorway 45mpg v 41 mpg its not a great difference. Apart from servicing I'm not finiding running costs to be much worse than my 1.2, tax is 65 more on the 172 but inusrance is £140 less than I paid for the 1.2 last year.

As Martin said dci's are far superior to any of the non RS petrols. They'll do a true 55-65mpg, are faster and more economical.

  306 GTI-6
Thats probably true Brett, But then again, I bet if you ragged both a 1.2 and a 172, the difference may be be more pronounced.

I love my 6, but god does it drink fuel when you use the loud pedal slightly agressively, and the problem is, the car makes you want to do just that lol.

The only time I drove anything less than a 1.6 was whilst learning, and that was a 1.5 diseasel. No tell a lie, I once had a 1.4 Xsara as courtesy car for a day, and it was dog slow. I even walked 6 miles rather than drive it when i had it lol.

Other than the 3 cylinder cars you get from Toyota, Pug and Citroen etc, 1.2's are pretty much the slowest cars on the road, with a few exceptions. "Nippy" is just a word that is used by people who have not driven faster cars. Saying that, faster isn't always better.

Oh Rly?

i found my old 1.2 nippy  ive never really found a situation where it wasn't fast enough

having not had any real grunt you cant tell what your missing out on ;)

I agree, I love my car and its done me for last couple of years but I definately want something more powerful.

I would think so on a public highway, on track with a decent driver/tyres you would probably get lapped in reverse

^^ Go back and watch the vid above please! then come back with a sensible comment!

I gather from your post you dont own a 172/182?

Ive owned both a 172 and a 1.2 and trust me regardless to that video, there piss slow, painfully, piss slow

Err... how? if that focus is standard will do 0-60 in 10 seconds, a 1.2 is like, 13+? after 60 the gap is only gunna get bigger.

A) The 1.2 driver is someone with driving skill equal to the stig, as well as the guy in the 172 only owning the car for 1 hour prior to the video.
B) It's just a video made for people like you so they think a 1.2 isn't that far off a 172?

If you think a 1.2 is anything near a 172/ 182 then find a video of them racing in a straight line, rolling start from 30.

Painful but true.

To put this in context, a Clio Sport will lap the Bedford circuit in circa 1.31 and a 1.6 Focus will lap in around 1.43. So around 12 secs difference on a small circuit. A 1.2 will probably take another 5 secs on the Focus.

17 secs a lap is a lot of time. It's about the same difference between a Sport and a Radical, which is massively fast!
