In my opinion cars are for driving, paintings are for looking at.

Yes, my 3 cars are all driven and I get grief about how I don’t polish them up BUT...

If I was a multi millionaire I would 100% have a huge indoor car space with an RS500, Integrale, 22b, GTI-R etc just to look at. I’d be more than happy wandering around in there at night just admiring the details.

Of coarse I’d have replicants to drive but I do consider them art too, same as some motorcycles. I’ve even considered buying a sports bike for my lounge already as I’d rather stare at that than watch TV.

The chap I mentioned above, we’ve honestly spent hours just staring and talking about his cars. One day I was supposed to be changing some carb seals on a 365bb and we lifted over the rear clam of that car and spent a good hour just admiring it and talking about cars (great when I’m getting paid to have petrolhead conversations). God knows how long the timing belts are gonna take me as I’ve gotta do 2 of them for him soon.

I’d have no problem seeing cars as art, certainly better than a 2d painting in my eyes.

The RS Clio is following the same path as the R5GTT. Currently in the cheap-and-plentiful stage, like the five was 2 decades ago.

Give it 20 years and minters will be worth quite a bit because of the attrition rate thinning the ranks. Parts will go up in price when OE stuff runs short.

Man i hope the investment w*****s don't descend on Clios. Its bad enough the Porsche lot keep banging on about values and what's the best spec for resale blah blah.

Anyone who invests in any automobile for anything other and pure driving enjoyment is clearly missing the point.
They already have with the V6, plus the constant traders trying to flip them for profit based on the recent value increases.

The move to electrification was an optimistic target as it was. All manufacturers have just been given a blank order “this is what we want” with the powers that be having given no foresight as to how we actually get there.

EV and battery technology is advancing every day, but there are still so many roadblocks even if we just think about the cost of materials. The fact we have no way to recycle lithium at present, lack of fuel tax revenue and the massive elephant in the room of the obvious lack of charging infrastructure.

The whole planets economy has been battered by the C-19 pandemic and the UK alone has borrowed a further £400bnto prop up the economy.

So that alone... where’s the money coming from to build an EV infrastructure?

The EU has still chosen not to move the EU7 emissions target. With the automotive industry already on its knees trying to appease the targets, and the fact none of us are making any money from EV vehicles. If something doesn’t give then there will be no motor industry in 5 years time!

The obvious answer is to push the target date back, however who knows what will happen. I know I’ll still be bumbling about in a then 20 year old orange French box of giggles.

I just looked up my old Clio V6 and it’s been SORN for the last 5 years.

Owed me about £7k that car, was mint and had about 15k miles. Prob worth a bit more these days.

Mid-to-high 20's if its still low miles and good nick.

Mine is just over 80k but in excellent nick, with some nice OEM+ mods and a fresh coat of paint, i'd put it at £20k, maybe £22k with both sets of wheels and belts done.

They used to be worth about £5 to people on here years ago, every thread used to go “172 is faster/better” :D

Current mileage is around 50k going off MOT before SORN.

I can still feel the sweaty back! Never even considered one but took it in px for my Evo 6 RSX (another rare beast) and loved it.

I think no matter how much money I had, I'd always thrash whatever was on my driveway. If I won the lottery I wouldn't be filling a garage with supercars, I'd probably just buy me and my mate's a bunch of Caterham's to do trackdays in together!

My driveway would be full of french shite no doubt in various stages of completion... 😂

Oh and maybe a 997.2 sport classic.

Lol - similar with the Megane R.26R. Remember the time when people mocked and pointed fingers at a fat-assed French car with a set of monkey-bars for the back seat and a perspex rear window? Renault couldn't give them away.

Then the motoring press got their hands on one and overnight the kudos and demand was achieved. Decent ones to this day still commanding a very healthy price.

I paid £400 for my 172 and I will happily send it through a tyre wall... upside down if need be😂😂

I can beat that, paid Feck all for mine (well couple hours helping someone). Really gutted as my neighbour has just gouged a fkin scratch in the door, really fuming as the paint was all original.

I don't get the fast ford thing, loads of money for something that being polite, is rubbish!
This. Dave who lives in Romford doesn't have the brain cells to realise he would be better off investing the money elsewhere but different strokes for different folks. I imagine most just want bragging rights.

I'd love another R5. But I like to drive my cars and being honest, the last one I had wasn't the best thing to drive to work in rush-hour on the M1. When it failed mot and sat on my drive for a year every time I got home and saw it it cheered me up. With a sensible hat on, I'd never pay the going rate for one to sit in the garage and look at, nor would I want to drive one on a regular basis or have to find parts to fix one. So I guess a classic that takes me back to my youth isn't a good idea then.
The 1*2's are following the same path now, and they thoroughly deserve to lauded as much as the 205 or R5 are but in 10 years time they will feel a bit s**t to drive for sure. If you're considering keeping yours long term start hoarding parts now while they are available at reasonable prices. Cup splitter or Cup brake light too expensive for you now? Have a look how much a 5GTT gear knob costs!

If I ever win the lottery I'll work through a long list of performance cars I'd love to own. Clio V6, M3's, GT3's, Cosworths etc and I'd buy the best lowest mileage ones I can find and drive them like they should have been.

On a side note, my dad had a 1965 Mini Cooper when he was 18. It was lying in a shed, he was a mechanic and he got it for next to nothing. It turned out to be a Monte Carlo rally ex works car type of thing. 970S over square engine. He sold it for £500 or something daft at the time. Can't imagine what it would be worth now!

Would go for around £40k now if original and excellent condition. I'm more into minis than my clio and I've got a mk2 cooper as my lockaway investment/dry summer use. Now there's a car that brings more smile per mile than most!

Mental isn't it! I've told him he should have kept it ffs, what a bellend lol. Very sought after cars now. Have you seen that episode of Bangers and Cash with the barn find mini? Worth a watch mate! The Mini they find is totally rotten but it's still a shell. Think it fetches something like £17k.

Yes the mk1 cooper s pulled out of a garage. Then sold at auction for £18k. That's the dream find for any mini fanatic. To think people would buy one for £50 just to see them on the road for a week or two then scrap it. Makes me feel ill thinking about it. A friends dad has a mk1 cooper s 1071 locked up for his retirement.

I spotted a mini the other day and as it passed the 107 in front of me it looked tiny. They are definitely not lot of car for a lot of money!

As a Mini owner I find current Mini values absolutely absurd. I used to work for Endaf Owens and we used to cut cheap shells up to turn them into grass racers, an mot failed mini could be had for £100 👍 They're great fun, but I feel I'd be thoroughly disappointed if I paid what they fetch now.

£18k for a unsalvagable shell is bonkers, it's £18k for a number plate and vin number that will inevitably be stuck on a new heritage shell with a non original engine, how is it still a "genuine" Cooper S then?

I suppose most "genuine" Coopers and Ss have been reshelled, and if done well its nigh on impossible to check; ultimately at one stage they were worthless and while the mk1 cars are slightly different, the rest are all the same. Couple that with the fact you can build a better A-series in your shed than a factory 1275 S engine (and a 1071 and 970 are mostly interesting because they're rare) and I don't really get Coopers 😂😂

I own the following cars, they are all in a unit, under lock and key.

S2 Escort RS Turbo
Clio 172 Cup
Volvo 850R
Mk1 Clio 1.8 16v
Fiat Coupe 20vT

Apart from the Mk1 clio (that I owned before, about 10 years ago so doesn’t really count) I’ve never driven Any of them. They were purchased as investments and are serving that purpose rather well tbh!

I have a track car, I have a daily and I have a family car. I don’t need to drive them to get enjoyment, they were bought for a purpose and they are serving that purpose. No different really to a landlord that buys houses for investments (Except I can’t afford to do that 😂)

I don’t get why people get so upset about people that invest in cars. Why does it bother you so much??

I have no issue with people buying cars to make money and I love your collection, the 850R in particular. I try to buy them before they go up in value but that's because I'm cheap 😀 Though I struggle to see how you'll make meaningful money without spending serious money in the first place.

A buy to let property requires you to just have a deposit, your Tennant then effectively pays your mortgage for you, at the end of which you have an asset that you didn't really pay for and will always be desirable, people will alway need houses. If the market dips you can often afford to wait for it to pick up, alternatively you can keep it ticking over as an earner by continuing to rent it out.

Cars on the other hand require constant and sometimes expensive maintenance, they depreciate with use, and they're difficult to store. Surely your unit costs you money? And nobody pays for them for you😂

With current emphasis on banning older ICE vehicles and general attitudes shifting towards environmentalism, I think interest in owning quirky, fast or interesting normal cars will wane especially if they become difficult and expensive to keep and run. Exotic cars will be relatively immune, but I think in the current climate I would rather invest in trainers than cars 😂

You've got so many great cars, get out and drive them man!! 😊
