Inlet manifold question

  172 cup trackday
Ok, i have a clio 172 cup on an 03 plate, and a friend has a 172 cup on a 52 plate, he is a mechanic so we decided to change the timing belt, water pump and tensioners yesterday, whilst changing them we noticed that underneath the inlet manifold his one had an oval shaped flute coming from the plate attached to the rocker cover, going into the inlet manifold, whereas mine had a flat plate attached to the rocker cover with a hole matched with the one on the inlet.
Is this a diy mod somebody has carried out ?, what are the benefits ?(if any)
Cheers
Paul

What worries me is he has carried out all that work and didn't know what it is, it's a breather. So if he didn't know that, did he know you need Renault locking tools to change the cambelt?

Also I wouldn't have worried about the water pump, they are super reliable and are not driven by the cambelt anyway

Sounds like you've got the 182 one instead of the Ph2 172 breather system.

Your car ever been on ITB's?

Could be Danny, or someone has bought a set of matched ones off a 182?

Or of course someone had told the previous owner that fitting a 182 one would make it faster lol

Someone once told me that the 172 has 172bhp, the 172 cup had 182bhp and the 182 had 182 bhp at the wheels flol

Exactly what i thought soon as i started reading it!

calm down chaps, didn't expect a barage.
To clear a few things up-
we knew it was a breather, what we couldn't decide is why one was flat onto the inlet manifold and one wasnt, wether it was a mod from factory or by a previous owner.
Water pump- I wanted to change mine as I had already bought it for peace of mind as it will be tracked.
Cam locking tool= of cousre we bloody did, no cowboys here.

So in answer to my question, why is mine different to his ???, might be a bit of a novice on clio cups, but I have had many hot Renaults years ago then went into Subaru's with my latest one being a P1 with 400bhp, all done with my own fair hands.

Not sure mate ?
so I may have a 182 breather plate ? not a 172 one ?
will that be ok or do i get a genuine one ?

  182, SQ7, Trafic
It's still genuine, won't effect it in anyway.

Dis he use the locking tools both side? And the Crank pin?

  172 cup trackday
locking tool went across both cams on nearside, crank pin bolt undone in the depths of the engine and pin pushed in to lock crank, all correct procedures followed for tensioning and tightening the crank

Good to hear you know what you are doing, we see far to many people who fall into the trap of being given false information - nothing personal mind, just friendly banter :)

id say it was probably a previous owner who has fitted a different inlet mate.

For reference, my old 172 on throttle bodies, with over 140k (over 50k by me) was tracked a lot and was still on the original pump - good practice to replace it as matter of course, but they are spookishly reliable :)

Don't let it worry you, as Danny has said it won't make any difference to the car

oh, welcome to the club by the way :)

You used this tool?

Just worried as if not correct you could potentially knacker your engine. These aren't any normal 16v cambelt job.

All done by the book, procedure taken from the bosch autocentre data, where my man is workshop manager. We have done loads of jobs between us with no issues yet.
Beginning to wish I had never asked

Autodata is good, but not for these - iv not had to use AD for an F4R, but I have heard from others it's not right mate

No problem mate, someone will be along soon who has more experience with autoddata than me and might be able to offer some advise, but I have heard AD does is not accurate with these.

Does it drive ok? Normally it will be down on power if the timings out

  182, SQ7, Trafic
Autodata is wrong I believe.

We're only looking out for you as we've been here a while and seen it happen countless number of times!

  172 cup trackday
Bugger, I will have to check, pretty sure it was autodata. doh
So what is the difference ??? is it to do with the dephaser ? and advance in timing ??
Yeah sorry, to start with though the question was about the breather lol

Tbh this is what happens on forums alot of people find something to make people paranoid with their cars... It's not a hard job as long as you have the correct tools!!

Have you already done the job, if so and the car in running fine then don't worry about it lol

You want to be a member of any M3 owners forums they are places full of paranoid owners lol

You shouldn't have!! It's like cambelt gustapo on here! It's good for the registered traders on here as people are too terrified to take them elsewhere. Yes it's not the simplest engine in the world but no more complicated than the zetecs with no keyways and vvt and you don't hear half the horror story's with them! People can mess anything up if they try hard enough/lack skill

Must admit, it looks that way. heres hoping that its fine lol
if anything it would be the pulley lock that is different, the rest looks the same, but i;ll check anyway

  172 cup trackday
ok doubts over, just spoken to my mate and looked in the garage, we had all three guides lol, auto data, bosch auto centre data and Renault guide, donated to us by his mate.
Yeah all good !!!
so looks like I have a 182 breather plate !, going to change that for a standard 172 cup version

  182, SQ7, Trafic
Then in won't fit your inlet manifold as you'll need one with a hole in.

Just leave it, no harm in it.
