Installation Pictures

Dont suppose anybody has got any pictures of how to run the power cable for an amp through the bulkhead of a 172. Finally getting round to installing my stuff but it looks a right pain to get that cable through.

I think Ive found the grommit (oval thing, inch or so wide, couple of inches high) but that comes out behind the firewall, so how exactly do you get the bloody thing through. Ive looked at previous messages and they say that you disconnect the bonnet release cable, I take it that you disconnect it from the inside? Any information about this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, this amp & hu were fitted to my 1.2 (99 grande), I had an autoleads adaptor for a sony stereo (Although my HU isnt sony, it accepts sony input) is this the same cable on the 172? I take that by unplugging it on the back of the display unit Ill lose only the HU information and not the clock & temperature.

Thanks.

Adrian

My stalk adapter lead is a connects2 one that fits all clios after 2000, so I dont know if the autoleads one will work or not. You are right, you will loose the head unit information on the display, but you will keep the temp and time.

As for the grommit, I didnt remove the bonnet cable from it. Its a little fiddly, but you can just cut throught it. I will try and get a pic for you later if you want.

Cool. After reading various threads on here Im left just a little confused about the whole grommit/release cable operation. What I really want to know is, do you pull the grommit into the car? (I read one thread where the guy pushed it out of the car and behind, but could never get it back properly).

I think the faq says do a search, but itd be nice if we had some concrete information and pics that way nobody could ever get confused!

Im not sure whether the connects2 box would work, Id need to contact them to find out. My HU isnt a sony one and I think the connects2 box uses some sort of proprietry bus connection on the sony, my HU (or more precisely the external tuner module) has a 3.5mm jack plug on it which just reads resistances, the autoleads adaptor just converts the renault stalk controls into resitances, so theres nothing clever going on with proprietry buses....

I know how u feel m8! I had the same problem when I was installing my amp! Its pouring down with rain at the mo, so I will take a pic when I have the chance and it aint raining! But basically all you need to do is get a stanley knife a slowly make a hole. When I get the pic up youll be able to see exactly where.

Dude, i pulled back the carpet on the pass side and shoved my hand up the deadening stuff. In the Engine bay, unbolt the coolant reservior (Think it that from memory) and un clip the deadineg in the engine bay and you should see the grommet. Took about 20 minutes to do, but then the rest is a piece of P1ss! Hope this helps

Thanks Neil & blink.

Unless Im looking at the wrong grommit, I dont need to pull the carpet back, the grommit Im looking at is fairly high up on the passenger side, this is as far as actually getting the cable through, I may well have to pull the carpet back to feed it through the car....

A mate of mine is going to give me a hand installing, Ill take my camera with me and hopefully get some good pics of the complete process and stick them on a web site. Hopefully this should happen next weekend, unless the weather decides otherwise.....

Once the amp & hu are installed and working Im going to have to find some speakers, Ive got infinity reference speakers which I had in my previous car, but Ive never liked them and personally think theyre a bag of......

Once again, thanks.

The other grommet is a pain to get to (Like the other one isnt) as it exits behind the washer bottle and means you need to dismantle the wipers etc(balls to that). Although it isnt easy, i went the way i went as its easy enough to push a screwdriver through, tape the cable on and pull it back. The grommet is about level with the bottom of the glove box about central in the footwell. Good luck with it all. Im thinking of putting some Alpine 5" and 1"compos in the summer, cant be arsed to sit there in the cold trying to rewire the front speakers.......
