Ok, got my internet connection working without using AOL 9.0 (thanks to this thread: clicky). Currently using my rubbish BT modem i was given circa 3 years ago.. lol

Got a lovely wireless netgear one to set-up.

What is the best way to do this? I don't want to mess up my internet connection. Is it best to delete all my current connections and start afresh???

u dont need to do that, in most cases its just a case of plugging it all in, going into your routers config screen by typing something like 192.168.1.1 into the addy bar, there should be a wizard to set it up, u need to put your isp login details etc into it, theres nothing to it really

Netgear comes with a CD to set it up. Steps you through internet connection, Wireless Security etc. Then uploads it to the Router. Jobs a good un.

Dont even need to touch the Web based Interface. Sometimes with AOL you have to change the MTU setting on the router. But try it first without changing it.

If you need a CD let me know have loads lieing round the office that never get used

As said...the address is http://192.168.0.1 by default on the Netgear routers. I think it's admin for the username and either admin or password for the password.

ok, installed it all now... i have signal and it is all good. been on the website benclelland said to go on... but i can't for the life of me work out how to get it ot connect using my AOL connection details....

I am still conencted via my old modem so i can get online...

What do i do?

On the basic settings which you can find on the left you need to enter the connection details of AOL so that it can dial the connection automatically for you. The setting at the top will probably be PPPoA on the basic settings.

yeha i did that ^^^

This is really weird... It wouldn't connect at all without using my old modem and cables...

I got the disk out for the assistant gismo and it told me i had to connect the router via my ethernet before sorting a wireless connection... My computer is so old it only has normal telphone socket on the back of it and no ethernet conenction... So i thought i was funked.

I had unplugged all my old modem and thought i'd better log on CS for help but it seems to work!!!

IS this becasue i have filled out the details on the website link you gave Ben?

do i need to set up any encryption so people can't use my connection?

  RB 182
Before you do the encryption which as you say you will need to do I would make sure you can access the internet first.

I haven't setup a Netgear with using the wired connection but if have that working then that should be fine.

yeah i am connected via wireless with the router now... don't know how i did it but it works lol

my old modem is totally unplugged...

will it automatically log onto my interent connection when i start my computer up now?

  RB 182
Yep the router now does the dialing for you instead of your computer having to do it every time so your always connected.

If it works don't change anything to do with the connection ;)

Change the default connection to the bottom one and turn on WPA2 on your router

Encryption...back on the router with that address above and go to 'Wireless Settings'. Under Security Options select WPA-PSK and below that then enter a password to access the network which needs to be between 8 and 63 charactors, then click apply.

At this point it will throw you off as you don't have the correct password to access the network but reconnect as before and enter the password you have just put into the router.

ok, i had to rescan and find the router again and enter the password.

Now it says it is connected but won't work and i only get pages unavailable. keeps wanting to dial up my old connection.

Do i need to make my wireless connection the default on here?

Can't seem to work it out tbh.

Select 'Never dial a connection'.

You may have to reinstall the wireless adaptor as I've had it before where Windows just can't understand why it's now got to have a password to access it and it didn't before so it's easier to uninstall the adaptor and start again some times.

make sure its set to 'never dial connection'

then

click the 'LAN Settings' button and make sure that the 'Automatically detect settings' tick is clicked, then click OK.

Windows will then look for a connection. You might need to reboot the computer for it to work.

just did that and rebooted.

It connects to the router ok and says i am connected etc. but it just won't work... MSN doesn't sign in and all my internet is 'page unavailable'... :(

XP found my router no problems and it all sasy i am connected.

However as soon as i cut my old wired connection internet dies so clearly it ian't using it properly...

anyone got any advice?

Try getting window to manage your connection....i used to have issues with mine............

Start
My computer
right click
manage
Services and apps
Services
scroll down until you get to Wireless zero configerator
double click
start it and click on recovery and put restart the service in 1, 2 and 3rd failures.

This worked for me when my netgear was playing up. It dropped the connection time and time again.

I bought a new Netgear 2 days ago and dont have any issues whatsoever, dont need to do above anymore.

It may not help but its worth a go.
