Installing XP...

  Civic Vtec y0
Now Im sure I seen a thread somewhere before detailing how to make a fresh install of XP, however I have had a search and cannot find it. So if any one can then please paste the link, if not please help lol...

I have gave my old PC to the folks, all they really want to do is use the net on it so there is loads of stuff on it that they dont need so was thinking about a fresh install of XP? However I cant find my old disk, is there any way around this? Or would I just be better to remove all the old programs and file and defrag?

Comments please?

Cheers

^^

There are various versions of XP AFAIK. I lost my original OEM copy at some point, so I had to use a 'trial' version therafter. All other discs didn't want to accept my license key.

Bloody annoying, and NO I'm not going to buy another one!

I dont think the XP discs are code specific. I've always used a CD-R copy of windows home when repairing/re-installing windows and its fine.

The easiest and most simple way is to boot from an XP disc and format and reinstall in one from that.

I'd google it to be sure, but I've never had any problems at all.

Id download from somewhere a bit more secure than Limewire but thats just me.

Id get it, boot from CD, quick format the hard drive using the NTFS File System and go from there.

If it's an OEM key that you have you will need to ensure that you download an OEM XP copy, also checking whether you have a home or Pro licence.

You'll be able to find these on any good torrent indexer and some will even be slipstreamed with SP2. Just be sure to scan the ISO/files throughly with a good virus scanner first in case someone has decided to add a nice little trojan in there for you...and for godsake use PeerGuardian or Protowall if you are going to download anything MS related, even if you do have a legit and legal licence.

  Better than yours. C*nt.

Discs are code type specific. You can't install XP with an OEM code using an MVL disk, and you can't install XP using a Retail code with an OEM disk etc.

There are more types, but hey.

Oh yeah I know that, I thought you guys ment he'd have to use the actual disc that came with his personal system. Another OEM or retail should be fine if his was OEM or retail respectively.

If you got XP with that computer, you need a copy of an OEM XP disc.
If you bought XP yourself as an add-on, you'll need a copy of a retail XP disc.

If you can borrow from a friend, or download a copy then should be ok.

This issue should be on google or microsoft.com.

If you know what your WIndows license key is and what verison of XP it is for (HOme or PRo) then just get a copy of said disk and install it, entering your license key when prompted. You may need to phone MS to activate it though.

You can buy copies of the CD off of Ebay. I bought a Dell OEM CD for £5 and a Dell OEM license sticker for about £25 seperately off of Ebay.

And for the love of God please learn how to use Google, it can answer any question you have much more quickly than waiting for answers on a forum http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...z=1T4GGLF_enGB239&q=how+to+install+windows+XP
