insurance and points but with a twist

right the wifes insurance is up so im about to renew it thats not the problem the problem is them asking for the dates of all my points in the last 5 years. i just got a new license as i lost my counterpart and it came back with just one set on as my other were over 4 years old. but they want to know about points in the last 5 years as per usual but i just cant tell them as i dont know when they were !! i called the dvla they said as soon as they hit the 4th birthday their system deletes the record. they also said the police dont keep a record of it over 4 years either

so what do i do ?

Only in the event of you writing your car off, it being stolen, or fire damage or it just dissapears of the face of gods green earth will the insurance company phone the DLVA and do a "conference call" with yourself included.

The reason they do this is so that in the event of them having to pay out will they check, this is so they know you have been completley honest about your convictions because if you havent and they find out then they will deduct the cost of the points added to the premium as i found out the hard way when i put my dad as a named driver on my policy not knowing he had points from the past (they were 3 and a half years old) But thats a diffrent story...

So dont worry about it, tell them about whats on it, because as far as your concerned, the only points worth mentioning are the ones the DVLA have deemed appropriate to include

i think they ask for 5 yeas as thats how long the serious convictions stay on for, like no insurance and drink driving.

If you're just renewing your policy, they will have the details on file. Mine told me that my dad's points and an old accident are no longer declared on renewal policy as they are out of the date they need to know for.

not renewing as new policy i have found is ALOT cheaper on my insurance for the other car it just lists the month and year but not the day and most application forms require the day too

the dvla said i wouldnt bother telling them as they have no need to know about them at all


serious offences stay on license iirc for 10 years !!!

Is true about the 10 years for Drink Driving etc.

Don't think a company will be too fussed if you don't know the exact date and only know the month though!

How long endorsements stay on your driving licence
An endorsement must stay on your driving licence for the following periods of time:

Eleven years from date of conviction

If the offence is:

drinking or drugs and driving - shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80
causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs – shown on the licence as CD40, CD50 and CD60
causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis – shown on the licence as CD70

Well, its bit of an odden. If DVLA have NO record of it at all and you can never be found out then wouldn't tell them. To be absolutely safe, just be honest with the new company and tell them you can't remem the exact day. They might say just put the 1st of the month for each or to forget them; either way get them to send that in writing so you've got your back covered if they change their mind if ever a need of a payout. Only place they could probably check is your current insurance company if no official record of it.
