tbh - before he gave you a bill after the accident he should have got at least a couple of bodyshop quotes in writing so he could see what needed doing (just bumper, boot floor, etc).
He should then have shown them to you and you could both decide which bodyshop he wanted to use and when the job was done you both go to collect the car and after inspection and he's happy you pay the bill.
As he had the job done and you didn't see the repair in full then he should have done a proper inspection and if not happy at the time he should have spoken to the bodyshop manager.
as you didn't sort the repair then it's not your fault the repair wasn't done properly - you paid what was agreed, end of
It's down to your mate and the bodyshop to sort this out if the repair wasn't done right, if the BS bodged it up tough on your mate
