Insurance for first time driver

Im 16 nearly 17. So Im looking around for insurance as Im going to get my car probably in october or november. Im thinking about getting a 2002 Clio DCI 85. So far I have been quoted by Admiral and that was way too much. Then this company compared a few companies for me, I dont know who they compared but they said none of them would insure me because of my age. Can anyone recommend an insurance company that charges a reasonable price. Also if you know of anywhere that doesn't charge loads more for a few modifications.

Thanks, Chris

Your going to have to pay through the nose for insurance regardless of who your with im afraid. Direct line have that setup where you can build your no claims when you are a named driver on anotther policy so maybe you would be better doing that if possible?

u will get raped in the anus for ANY mods at your age...best bet is to keep it standard for a year or two sell it upgrade your car etc go from there.

tesco were the best when i was your age, however everywhere will try and bum you just keep searching around, try a few of the insurance compare sites like moneysupermarket or compare.com confused you may find them useful but if you see a really god insurance price follow it up to confirm that is there quote as often they piss you around and when you phone up to buy it it actually costs you another £500...

a lot of companies wont even quote you as you are still 16, so by 'pretending you are now 17 on the quote systems on the online will be a very close way of telling how much you will have to pay when the time comes around to insure ur car etc

hope this is useful.

ps make sure you get your own policy as main driver etc and start earning your NCB asap

I'll have a look on confused.com and tesco's to see what they quote. I was told green light are quite good but I think you need to have been driving for a year to go with them.

Thanks, Chris

Ok, I tried tesco but It would have to be 30 days before im 17 at the earliest to be able to get a quote off them.

I looked on Confused.com when I was searching a couple of years ago.....you will get a list of insurer's that will insure you (as some wont touch you) and the cheapest premium.......

Confused says I have to be at least 17 to recieve a quote. Are directline any good? I think they will quote me over the phone.

Well to start with, lie about your age on all quotes and always say you already own the car (try to find one on auto trader with the number plate showing) as i always found this gave me better results.

One company that cover some mods for absoloutely nothing is swiftcover.com, there is a list of basic stuff on there that they cover and you don't even need to tell them. Hope that helps. Maybe?

Ok im gunna ring nowich union. No lol, im going to go on one of those crash course things so I should pass quicker. But tbh I suppose it could take ages till I can take my test. You have to book the test a while in advance dont you ? Would swift cover charge if I had my car remapped ??

Thanks, Chris

alter your dob so that in theory you are 17 then they will give u a quote they not gonna quote for a 16y/o who cant even legally start learning to drive on the roads

yeh you have to book in advance varies from test centree how long it wll take.

Sorry to state the obvious then but most companies require you to have passed your test before giving you a quote......

I work for NU (not in the Motor Insurance Dept) but even with a discount they are one of the dearest companies to insure me, might be different for you though.

Quinn seemed good to me, was a lowest for me at 18. They also don't mind modifications as long as it isn't related to the engine.

forget it mate. cheap quotes at 17? in your dreams. expect to pay £1000+/ year - even for a banger! and I wouldnt even bother modding any car at 17 unless mummy or daddy pay for your insurance and/or you've taken advanced driver courses etc..

I expected it to be over £1000 but not over £5000 !!! Im going to have my car remapped and that is about it, but only if they dont charge more. Which is unlikely so I may have to wait a while like you say for modifications.

17 years old, clean license, no claims and insured on a Peugeot 1.1XN P reg, standard in everyway, on my mums policy = £1539.32/ year fully comp. The insurer I was with would not allow modifications to the car, phoned around about 6 insurers and they all said I had to be either 21 or 25 to have modifications.

Thats how harsh it is these days and that was 4 years ago.

PS. All insurers 9/10 charge extra for mods, a remap is not a cheap mod either as its an engine mod (if they will allow you to even do such a thing at 17!!).

They don't cover remap, here is a list of what they do cover, mainly cosmetic though...

  • Air conditioning
  • Alloy wheels worth less than £1000
  • Audio system worth less than £1000*
  • Modifications solely due to disability
  • Permanently fitted satellite navigation
  • Sunroof
  • Bull bars
  • Tow bar
  • Stainless steel exhaust
  • Roof racks, bars, bike racks or top boxes
  • Professionally converted to LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas)
Obviously all are not helpful but some is always better than none eh?

Oh dear.

As many people have said, you're going to get cornholed no matter which company you go with.

Try this broker I've been with since I was 17. They're a small brokerage in North London but they're damn cheap and although it was 5 years ago, I was insured on a brand new Pug 1.4 at 17 for £1400.

Victor Knight Insurance Brokers Ltd

they have a website too, google them.

You've got nothing to lose.

Oh and add your Mum as an additional driver!

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
a dci 80 you are looking at atleast £1600 on your own insurance, dci 65 about £1450, your cheaper insuring a 1.2 from my experience. and that depending on your spec can be more a dynamique os £70 more than an authentique
at the moment you will not get touched with a 10 foot barge pole, unless it is to ram it up you sphinkter. for mods fast car, do insurance through fluxand will insure anythign legal, but they will want £4000 plus a blow job for every one in the office twice a week over the course of the premium.
i got quoted £1500 for a s reg 1.1 saxo when i passed at 19, went insured under my dad for £400, but that comes with alor of risks Most places if they find out you have been the main driver they will not pay out.
also expect an excess of atleast £250 mandatory, most places whack an extra 250 minimun on you voluntary excess for being under 21 and about 150 for being under 21-25. tesco have a set £400 excess, so i have no voluntary, Norwich union simple plan give mt he the cheapest quotes however have a mandatory £375 excess and a £250 under 21 excess (total if you crash £625!)
tesco worked out cheapest for me in my 1.2 clio, but for others they have been expensive.

to be honest i'd wory about the next year of getting the license, you know the teory test, hazard perception, the crash courses arent really worth the money from friends experience, then lower your abishions, no remapp, (i know 120 odd BHP sound tempting but for a young driver it could kill you or loose your your license quickly), no exhaust no alloys, get a nice 995cc hairdryer, and run that till it dies, or get a really well paying part time job.

i went with liverpool victoria with my first car, they were the cheepest i found, jus had a quote on a 172 im gettin for £4250, top end, that was through compare supermarket.

A remap @ 17!? Not trying to be pessimistic but I think it's a little unrealistic. At 17 I was happy to be simply able to afford to insure my £300 1.3 Mk3 Escort! That was 10 years ago, car was completely standard and it was £1300 tpft!

When I was 17 I had a Saxo 1.1 on an 02 plate - cost me £2100 a year fully comp to insure on my own with Direct Line. It was the best price I could get and I was determined to earn some NCB so was forced to pay. I remember Norwich Union quoted me very UNHAPPY at over £3000!! Now I'm 21 with 3yrs NCB and am still paying £1200 fully comp for my Clio 182.

Ok im gunna try all these places but im going to tory confused first seen as it compares a few. I have been told I have to of driven for a few motnhs before I am allowed it mapped lol. The reason I want the dci is because I know you can get more out of it with a map than a petrol. Oh and is ur 02 DCI an 80 ?

Thanks, Chris
