Insurance - mileage

Im forever reading on here how low some people pay for their insurance. I think mine is very high considering my circumstances.

Any idea why mine is so dam high?

3 years ago I had a 306-GTi 6 which was worth more than my Clio and this cost me less to insure, plus I was 23 at the time. I then had a company car for just over 2 years. My new insurer, The AA allowed me to retain my full NCB which I had built up before getting a company car, so now this is what I have.

03 Clio 172, garaged overnight. I pay £1,042.00 with £120 excess. Ive got full protected NCB. Full legal cover, courtesy car etc. Ive got one SP40 for speeding on a motorway from mid last year. And a total loss from September 1999, my fault (Rover 200 Vi). Im 26 BTW.

When I had the Pug, I paid £1,100.00, that was the same policy. At the time I had one SP30 and the total loss of the Rover. The Pug was the Rovers replacement. Couldnt get a sensible car now could I ;)

So the only thing I can think of that it making my insurance so much is that I have down I do around 16000 miles a year? I have this because I know Ill do at least 12000 miles just getting too and from work. How much difference does the amount of miles you do make to the cost of the policy?

Or is an SP40 seen as worse than an SP30? 83 on a motorway, hardly a menace to society am I. Welsh Police hiding in vans...:mad:

Sorry, I know this is a long post. If you made it this far thanks :D

16000 shouldnt make too much difference, if you said 30000 then maybe but 16k doubtful

In all honesty though, they dont ask for the mileage of the car so they have not method of knowing how far you drive hence I always tell them nice easy 12k!!!!

Have you tried getting quotes from other companies? You would be surprised at the massive differences between some companies. Dont just stay with the same company when renewal time comes round, get cheaper quotes then ask your present insurer to beat them. Often they will, just to keep you as a customer. These days most insurance companies dont encourage customer loyalty, because they put their renewal costs up too much. When you start with them they give you the cheapest quote hoping that you will stay with them, but it doesnt often pay unless they keep the cost down.

Very often, your postcode makes a huge difference if you live in an area that has loads of claims/stolen/damaged car etc or the type of job you have puts up the cost - eg motor mechanics pay more because they are assumed to be tinkering about with their cars (so Im told). A friend of mine is a journalist and she pays massively for this sort of job as she drives all over the place doing interviews etc and often spends a lot of time hanging about in pubs and hotels waiting for people etc etc. Actors and musicians pay loads, musicians possibly because they might carry their instruments about in their car (unless it is a piano)!! If they get them stolen that could be their job at risk........ and so on.........

As far as I know my postcode isnt bad, although it does seem to be getting worse around here  WS11 I wonder if there is anyway of finding out?

I called round for a lot of quotes. My main problem was that if you dont have personal car insurance for over 2 years you loose your NCB. Id had a company car for 2 and a half. The AA were one of only two companies who honoured for me. Without it my insurance would have been £200 - £300 more. They also promised to beat everyone else. I told them a figure £100 lower than I had been quoted, and they quoted around £50 less.

Still cant help thinking it should be considerably cheaper than I paid 3 years ago on the Pug.

If you know anyone in the civil service , get them to join the CSMA and use their card number through frizzell insurance . They go through Liverpool /Victoria and discount heavilly for civil servants like my wife . Had £500 cheaper quote than one company !!!. Alright im Knocking on a bit at the wrong side of 30something but £600 a year fullycomp and protected aint bad for a group 16 car.

Im renewing mine this month.

Looks like Admiral will do the best deal for me so try them.

Im 27, 2 years no claims:

- £811 for 10000 miles a year
- £774 for 12000 miles a year

I think 10-12000 a year is the average so shouldnt arouse too much suspicion.

I found Direct line and Tesco very competative - for 3 yrs ncb they discounted %50 on my cup.

The premium is £1100 - Im 22 with an SP50

I am on ajoint policy and *almost* lost our no claims cos we had the years free renault insurance and a write off in that year, but Tesco told me that since they never took my no claims of 11 yrs (joint rembr) on board at start (obviously cos there was no premium to discount) then it was intact (and renault confirmed this). Luckily my mum had got a statment to the tune of 11 yrs before ending with her last paid insurer.

So online I got a high quote for me (one loss + 19yrs old) and her (11yrs no claims) and my dad (Sp30 + 6pts) of around £2000.

Direct line was about £1100

Elephant a reasonable ( I thought) £750

And then TESCO a brilliant £390!!!!! (we added all the extras like a hire car no matter what plus protected no claims £90) so total about £500 but I think brilliant.

For 20k miles pa.

Does sound pretty high.

Im just getting renewal quotes at the moment, 23, 4yrs NCD, no accidents or convictions, very good postcode area, standard car without alarm. Coming in around £650 fully comp without protected NCD, and £800ish with.

Amazingly Direct Line were about the cheapest, followed by Egg, followed by Tesco. Ill wait with baited breath (not) to see what Adrian Flux turn in when its actually time to renew as they seem to be finding it increasingly harder to keep up with people like Tesco, where a couple of years ago, no-one could touch them!

Liverpool Vic are also a good place to try, I got insured with them for half the price that Adrain Flux wanted for renewal! Flux wanted just over a grand!!

Oops, I just noticed I put Sp40, it should be SP50.

Insurance is a black art. My friend has an Impreza Turbo and is 28 years old. His renewal is around £750, but hes had quotes of up to £2k. The odd thing is that Im with Norwich Union, through the AA. He got a great quote from NU but not when he did it through the AA. Also a lot of companies who have been cheap for me arent for him!! The Ru is group 17 and the Clio 16D so theres hardly a world of difference there.

I reckon they make it up depending on what type of day they are having!!

I think Im being stung a little for having the company car for over 2 years, but I was prepared to pay more just to keep my full NCB. It was just luck that the AA were the cheapest and allowed me to use them :)
