Insurance Payout Advise

well....

After 7 months, Elephant have finally decided to make a payout offer for my Supra.

But... They've offered £4200 for it

My car was an absolutly mint UK Manual Supra Twin Turbo, which are uber rare, only 400 uk cars ever made and 100 or so were manuals.

Needless to say they have held their value very well, and to find a uk manual is one problem, but to find one with low mileage, FTSH and in excellent condtion is extremely and i mean extremely hard...

They still command circa £10,000.

Now what do i do? Ive told them it is tottally unexceptable, and ive disgusted they even offered me that price for my car, the claim handler said she'll speak to people higher up and contact me...

Whats going to happen? I'd be devasted if i got something stupid for it, ive waited long enough for this payment!

Its always worth refusing there first offer just pop through the trader etc and specialist mags see what price other cars are going for.

£10k seem a bit steap would have to be mint and very low milage I'd expect then again I'm no knowedge on supras.

  you may know it, clio?
always argue with what you get but yeh does seem cheap, whats the spec of it?

when i was disputing a clasim, i just cut out loads of ads from the auto trader tha half resembled my car, stuck them all to a sheet of paper, sent it to the ins co and said 'look, this is what i'm going to have to spend to get a like for like car'

2 weeks later, i got what i wanted lol

That's a different way of doing things! Well done though.

@OP. Tell them what they can do with that cheque, go for what you want +10%. Good luck!

Ask to speak with your total loss file handler. that is the person that will make the offer on your car. As already suggested you will need to get as many adverts for cars of the SAME or VERY similiar spec as yours and send them into them. I suggest emailing them or faxing them.

Explain to the file handler how rare your car is etc and the adverts will be your proof. They will look at cars similiar to yours in your area so you will have to really stress that your car is NOT just any ordinary Supra as the file handler will argue the value of similiar Supra's in your area.

Argue that you are not being put in the same financial position (as you were in before the car was a total loss) by their payout and that, that is what you pay your insurance premium for. If that doesnt work, not much will.

Hope this helps.

ive been through this

dont bother spending weeks arguing with the minions you get to speak to when you call up, they cant do much and they dont give a crap

do as suggested above and cut out ads and give them web addresses so they can look at similar cars

make sure you send everything recorded delivery and tell them you are now keeping records of all contact from them, and vice versa

if you get no joy with this go straight to the top, ask to speak to a supervisor or manager, or even better get their name and write to them

you suddenly ringing up and speaking to them ive found doesnt get you very far, even if they are higher up, if they have something in writing which has been sent recorded then they are pretty forced to do something about it and respond to you in writing

dont let them take the pi$$ out of you, if your attempts are not getting you anywhere, dont stress yourself out like i did, go higher and higher up the ladder, i ended up sending a 4 page letter written in a very small font to the MD of the insurance company i was with, his secretary then kept me regularly informed of what was happening and a reasonable time scale to expect responses

i got 3 times what they initially offered me, which was still below what it was worth but i guess it could be considered 'reasonable'

I went through this with my RX-7. Are you a member of the Supra Owners Club?

I was a member of the Rotary Club, and i got the chairman to write a cost estimate of the car - that convinced the ins. co. to value the car at £10k instead of £4k.

thats why u pay cheap premiums with elephant/bell/admiral ... shite service.

what to do mate is point out the places of examples for sale that would show your car to be of that value ... i.e autotrader

A mates golf went up in flames on a motorway and he was with elephant, took a while for them to give him a decent settlement. He just had to keep sending them cut outs of ads of similar cars.

I had the opposite when my 19 was written off, they offered me what I thought it was worth from the off, I couldn't have proved it was worth any more!

part of this comes down to quality of insurer. When my 182 was stolen, i got 900 more than the first offer, but that was all agreed within a week.

Elephants claims service have a poor rep.

whats the latest on this, im very interested

well, ive written a letter and sent adverts of similar cars etc.

So just waiting to hear back from them now, they said the manager is reviewing it and will call me by the end of this week. :)

If they give you a low offer ask them to find you one in that condition for that price and you'll take it :)
