insurance query

i want to put a RS grill on my 1.2 but i've been told that it will affect my insurance. is this true?

Dan

If you're worried about it you could always ring your insurance company up about it and ask them. Better safer than sorry really because they'll find anyway they can to avoid paying out.

I wouldn't worry about claiming a RS grille as a modification.

Be careful what you advise on a public forum as (correct me if I am wrong) you are telling this guy that he does not need to bother disclosing this modification. If this guy follows your advice and has a claim, he could potentially have a void insurance policy and no pay out for his claim (worst case scenario).

The official answer is that ANY change to the car from when it left the factory needs to be disclosed to the insurer, no ifs, no buts.

If you have a modified car or are planning to modify the car, you need to speak to a modification friendly insurer as some cannot cope with modifications.

cheers mate, i wasnt sure at first but thinking about it, it does make sense to get covered for even the smallest of things. What about HID bulbs, would they effect the insurance? Sorry about all the questions, just thinking to get it all done at same time rather than in bits.

Alot of insurance companys have it in catergories. So any changes to the inside, such as seats, comes as interior changes (for me it cost 20 quid) so exterior changes would be the same, just dont say a body kit lol

Where were you when no one believed me about mods!

To be fair, people who do not disclose will only have themselves to blame if they become unstuck.. Police and insurers are more and more wise to it.
It seems silly to me when you can speak to a specialist insurer and usually insure your modified car for not a lot more (sometimes less!!!!) than a standard vehicle! My company view drivers of modified cars as a lower risk as they care about their cars so are less likely to make a claim, our statistics back this up.

The one thing I do not like to see is someone advising someone else to not disclose their mods and this really should be discouraged.

Ok so I shouldn't have said the above. But in a lot of cases, insurance companies bump up your insurance for stupid reasons. Why should they increase your premium because you have a different style of OEM front grill?

People clearly need to use companies like yourself, who specialise in modifications and understand how different modifications should alter the policy. Therefore I retract my previous comment!

Fair play to you.

The thing is, most specialists would not increase your insurance premium for any cosmetic modification, my company certainly would not load the premium for a grill!
