Intermittent connection to wireless router...

  BMW E46 330i Touring
On my new PC it seems that the connection to the wireless router (free with Sky Broadband...) is very hit and miss.

It always shows the wireless network as being available, but sometimes just can't connect. I'll then return 5 minutes later and it's managed to connect of its own accord...

Any ideas!?!

Is the signal okay?

I dont like wireless, its s**t, ive only got it because of my mum's craptop, my pc is wired to the router. I was having the same problems when i first got a wireless router, instead of dragging cat 5 through the walls i was using a a s**tty dongle, disconnected all the time. So i wired it all up and its been fine since. Just my s**tty ISP that lets me down now.

e/ My idea is, that you situate the router next to your PC, and get some fone wire, drag it under the carpet from your phone socket to the router, and attach your pc to the router with Ethernet cable.

Might be worth a try, but my PC is upstairs and phone line downstairs. A few doors, stairs, etc separate them! Might be worth doing, but it would be a pretty permanent measure...

Signal is showing as being fine, alternates between 4 and 5 bars (out of 5). The reasons for not being able to disconnect are that the securty key has been entered wrong (it hasn't) and then it says the connection was 'cancelled'...

I dont like wireless, its s**t,

its not, its just yours isnt setup properly and possibly can not avoid channel co-habiting.

problem (and not for long) is that most peoples routers run 2.4ghz b/g radio. this means a slower speed for a start but the main problem is..

certain cordless phones,
security cameras,
microwaves,
microwave PIR`s
home heating controllers,
near by wireless (could be 20 homes your router can see)

are all sat in 2.4ghz range, this means you have 3 non overlapping channels 1, 6, 11

if ANYONE is sat on the same channel as you, there is interference.

now, the latest routers have 'N' radio, 108 non overlappnig channels, with dynamic frequency selection, power transmit control as stock.. i.e the radios can jump channels and alter power if noise is presant !

also they offer 400+ MBPS transfer vs 54 (22 each way)

but the main problem is

a.) signal strengh
b.) interference from 2.4ghz networks and other devices.

get a better router with N radio and it will be ethernet fast (well, certainley quicker than your broadband or any broadband can offer)

LG sells a TV now with 4GBPS wireless !

its just the frequency, its overcrowed and useless now.

which is a shame as i have 400 access points on the same frequency and hundreds of possible sources of interference to deal with in my job.

possible solution is to scan for other networks and see what channels there on and move your away from it.
