intermittent cutting out, using loads of fuel and poor idle

every now and then my car will not sit at 1100rpm idle and instead struggles and the revs drop to 400-500 and then it will slowly just cut out. This can be warm or cold and seems to make no difference, but it's okay most of the time. When it starts acting up though if I set off driving it will hesitate and misfire and use a load of petrol... for example last night I used a half tank of petrol in 32 miles, where at the weekend I managed almost 350 on a full tank.

Could this be a faulty map sensor or leads/coilpack problem as it's not always and the car drives superb most of the time, just has started to play up a lot at the moment...

any help greatly appreciated.

I'm going to change the temp sensor first, as I've just been informed I dont actually have a map sensor :eek: lol

It has to be a sensor though, as it's only doing it every now and then, this morning I've driven it to work and it's been absolutely perfect... lol

mine does exactly the same....

already changed temp sensor and tdc sensor and it hasnt made a bit of difference.

is this on your 172?

i took off every sensor and dried them out with electrical contact cleaner and used some electrical compound grease on all the plugs.....

took off all the ht leads which are only a year old, checked the plugs and again cleaned out both ends of each lead and used electrical compound grease. seems to of made a small bit of difference but it still cuts out occasionally

I'm new to all this 17poo milarky, if it was doing it on the Willy I'd have been okay as I could diagnose faults on that for fun... had that many though so experience is the best teacher! lol

Stoddie, before it would cut out, but after Andy remapped it the revs would start to drop when it was being ghey, but it wouldn't totally cut out. It does hold the revs on more now anyway, but it's just really odd as it only does it 10% of the time, but with vary levels of effects. Last night being the worst I have seen it. I've eliminated the map, as if it was that it would simply do it all the time, so my only other guess is a sensor fault or worst case possible faulty ECU... but then I'd have thought it would do it all the time...? I'll change the leads anyway I think and get a new sensor... anyone know the part number for it, it's a Ford one I'm told and it's blue coloured... that's all I know though lol

The cutting out bit I can live with to a degree, it's the non smooth running and 400% increase in fuel consumption that's causing me bother lol. I'm pretty sure it's something simple though, as my engine's mainly standard for the most part...

my revs drop, but it normally always seems to be when the clutch is dipped, never seems to happen when in neutral......

for example if im coasting with my foot on the clutch pulling into the drive way it always does it.

part number you need is either:
P R82 00 647 554
or
S R77 00 101 968

one of these is a tdc sensor - i changed them both at the same time but not sure which is which on the old invoice.... (its on the gdi thread!)

another problem which i thought of is maybe a clogged lambda sensor? never checked mine though - but would make sense if it was?

yeah I'm sure Andy would do, but he's at the other side of the country and it's highly unlikely that it's anything to do with the ITB setup, as it would either work or not work.

Stoddie - it doesn't seem to matter, can dip the cluth and the revs will drop alarmingly fast when it's being ghey, but can be sat in traffic and it's idling perfectly at 1100rpm and then it will cut up to 1.5k and then start dropping off and trying to cut out.

Does yours use the same blue ford sensor then too?

And dont think it's lambda related as I bought a wide band and fit that only a few weeks ago for the hell of it lol

right, bit of an update. Spoken to Ric Wood who changed one of my sensors a few weeks ago and as the OMEX doesn't have error reporting he said it makes it almost impossible to diagnose unless Map3000 is running on a laptop in the car at the time of the fault... obviously with it only happening some of the time this would give me a rather hefty labour bill, so his other option was to take it to him when it's doing it and call him and get him to check it there and then. Not really ideal though tbh... nor is me plugging in my laptop to look blankly at the software as I have no earthly idea what any of it means!

Spoken to Andy and I've decided I'll brave the long journey down as he's kindly offered to take it to work and back next week with the laptop plugged in for when it rears it's ugly head, which is ideal as it will do it at least once in that period... so, it could cost me a tenner in fuel there, or about 4-5 full tanks if it's being a dick, but at least it will be fixed :)

Oh, Ric's other solution was to ditch the OMEX and go onto a DTA or MOTEC... but at £1500+ setting up costs I dont really fancy paying all that just to have error reporting! hehe

Andy J - throttle bodies were all removed, clean and re-balanced by Andy a month ago and are still clean as fook, plugs I'll check... dunno about coilpack or TDC or MAF though... or if I even have a MAF?... lol. I was told it wont be the TDC sensor as it would pink? Which from the described sound it makes it's doing nothing like that as it sounds the same as it always has.

yeah think mine has the same ford blue temp sensor. but as far as i can see theres only the one? after the thermostat which was a retrofit....


i checked all the plugs, tdc was changed and the mk1 172 doesnt have a MAF.....

let me know if you find a fix!

yeah will do, I'm pretty sure it will be something simple, or worst case the ECU is fooked maybe? If that's the case then it's a perfect chance to go on the new latest OMEX... and put some more agressive cams in and 182 manifold the fooker :D lol

Chris, that's a good point, just checked and there's half a badger in one of them! :eek: lol

if you got a multimeter you could check the resistance, and no, i don't know what it should be. but someone must

it did it on the old lambda and i've put a wide band on and it still does it... incidently it was fine yesterday and today it's been perfect too and it's been about as cold, so it's very odd to say the least... shame the roads are too slippy to have any fun when it's working rate!

Andy, are you okay there mate, or should I be calling an ambulance?

lol, nope, never again mate, too old to risk bothering with one. Been there done that, was thinking Trophy on ITB's next or Meg Turbo... but tbh I'm just going to spend around £15-20k on an E39 M5, insurance is cheaper than my Clio too! ...well, providing I keep it standard! lol
