Internet monitoring at work

  UR R26R.5, VW Golf R
A mate has just emailed asking me how he would check to see if his internet usage is monitored and stored on the server, as it says it is in his Terms and Conditions "Logins to, and the use of the Companies network is monitored and audited"

I've just checked the policy where I work and it says the same, but I'm pretty certain internet access is not monitored other than someone checking the history. Its not exactly a massive company, either. We're all hooked up onto a server machine where we can access our drawings etc. There's also nothing on the server machine which says so anyway, and I've been doing it for a few years now! lol. Its simply a case of deleting history/cache/files etc.

Anyway, is there any way he would know, as he's been using Ebay and online poker for 4 hours a day! lol! He also has access to the server machine.

I've already told him he's screwed and suggested he just sets fire to it

there are ways he would never know but usually just check the internet properties if it has an ip in the proxy settings then chances are they can see it

if done properly you would never know. A proxy would run transparently on your lan monitoring everything, or as above set in your browser (which is how we do it). could be done ona client but but unlikely.
check your ip settings and what your gateway is and what it resolves to (ie gateway =192.168.0.1 - then do nslookup 192,168,0,1) if its a router u may be ok, if its not then its probably monitored, can also try web browsing that ip also to see if its a web page of a router. could also do a tracert www.google.co.uk and see where it goes

try a RDC to your home pc.

unmonitored internet and msn, email etc!! thats what i do cos they monitor it here quite strickly!

a lot of firewalls might not allow it but some will

The place he works is only about 20 man strong. Just in an office, same as where I work really.

They have winVNC, which is a monitoring package I believe? But simply closing that down stops incoming connections and monitoring.

The server is on a router, too.
I think the Policy documentation is just a copy and paste, but he'd like to check it.
