Ipaq navigation

Anyone know how I can turn an Ipaq into a navigation tool and speed camara detector? I know it can be done but dont know how?

Easy mate - you need SatNav software (TomTom always gets good reviews - http://www.tomtom.comhttp://www.tomtom.com), the iPAQ or similar PDA itself, a GPS receiver to receive the signals from the satellite, and cables to connect them all together. For the speed camera part, you need a POI overlay such as CheckPOInt which tells you where all the scameras are located.

Ive got this setup in my motor and it all works very well indeed

you can use trafcam to do the speed camera detection. It runs with the GPS and basically holds a database of cameras which is updated every few days. Since its a database rather than a detector it can be updated to include new types of camera.

I use it on my palmpilot.

One advantage if u use a pocketpc is u can run trafcam and your navigation software at the same time - very handy.

trafcam is £50 to buy and then £50 a year subscription after the first one.

Not exact prices as you can always save by shopping around, but as a guide

PDA - iPAQ new is anywhere between £250-£500 depending on model. 2nd hand ones are obviously cheaper - prob £100-£200 again dep on model. You might need to upgrade the PDA depending on the spec - extra memory is normally needed to hold all of the maps.

SatNav software - £100-£200 depending on what one you go for

GPS receiver - £70-£150 - including the cables

Traffic Camera detector software - well CheckPOInt is free, as are the updates. You can get them from the site mentioned above.

I want a detector, navigation system and PC in one. And its alot cheap than buying proper car products!

Youll still pay upwards of £300 for a GPS based speed camera detector a la Road Angel etc - the iPAQ does this, plus the whole SatNav thing, and most of the stuff your PC will do into the bargain - email, play MP3s and video, browse the web etc.

Its also portable unlike built in SatNav systems that you can specify on most cars now - so I can take it with me to my next motor instead of the person I sell mine to getting the benefit of the £800 odd that it costs to get a SatNav system from the manufacturer. And going from my experience of manufacturer SatNav, the TomTom stuff is streets ahead

Alright mate! Ive seen a TomTom Navigator for Dixons for £279.99 this inculdes the GPS reciever, car stand and all the software. Is this a good deal or do you know of a better one?

Im thinking of getting an Ipaq 3950, which pda you got?

no i cant dont ask. (they dont work with renault yet)

and ours are bluetooth = fooking expensive
