iPhone 4 home button unresponsive...

Have had this problem a few months back, but then it started to respond well.. but has recently started becoming unresponsive again!

What i mean is when i press the home button, nothing happens, i hear it click, but nothing happens... even pressing it hard doesn't do anything...
But after a several presses, it responds, but then it doesn't... very temperamental!!! Driving me insane!

Has anyone experienced this? Is this hardware or software issues?

Can anyone advise?
