ipod 4th gen help

before you all say it,i know its old but i like it....

heres the problem..no matter how long i charge it for it will either turn itself of or just freeze showing the apple logo..could this be the battery or something else as it doesnt do it all the time..sometimes it will work for a few days until i skip to another song and then it will freeze..also it wont sync up to my car stereo anymore..can this be fixed or am i looking at getting a new one

my Dad has a 20GB 4th gen iPod and that started doing the same just after Xmas, I thought it was fooked, but decided to change the battery anyway as they are cheap off eBay

anyway, the new battery did the trick and it works perfectly
