ipod question

ive just got my gf a new ipod nano, i already have one and have itunes setup on my laptop, im going to put some songs on it for her for xmas, can i just plug it in and load my songs onto it? and if i cant how do i do that?

basically if u ogot the options u can pick selected play lists to add to the ipod , or u can set it so any songs in itunes will goto the ipod
