is it worth modifying your car

  none :(
as title says really, i want to do things to my car but dont know if it would be worth it in the end when it comes to selling it what are peoples thoughts on this.

If you think it will add value to your car it will not, but if you want to "personalise" it then go for it. Just dont spend thousands.

  MCS R56
Depends what gains you want and at what price. Some people will be put off when you come to sell but some will be looking for some mods.

You will not regain your money on selling, should you make mods. (Unless you go mental with the......$$$$$$$!)

  Mazda MX5 1.8
depends

some people choose to drink away their money. some choose to buy expensive clothes/jewlery & some decide to buy bits for their car

its a personal choice

Any permanent "mods" to a car are a big no no IMO: it's all a matter of taste at the end of the day, and sometimes you can make your car less appealing.

Example: body-kits, requiring professional work to fit/remove. Same with engine tweaks.

Bolt-ons upgrades aren't "mods" IMO anyway: (alloys, exhausts, induction kits etc), a car can be returned back to standard spec within a few hours.

If you bolt-on any upgrades, be sure to keep the standard items for when you want to re-sell the car.

You can then sell the used upgrades, aiming to get around 50% of what you paid for them.

Nope never is.

Then agian neither is buying a 172 over a 1.2 or diesel basic spec car. Ther eno logic in running a 172/1.6/1.4/1.2 16V/dci100 etc the 1.2 8V and dci65 are cheaper.

Its more a fun hobby you'd spend £50 on drinks on a night out say spending on the cars much the same.

Modding is never really worth it in a money value sense as it is very rare a moddified car will be worth more than standared... I presonally like modded cars and love to moddify mine...

...your decision

  Mk1 MX-5 next summer
some alloys and a new headunit ent gona raise the price of ure car to what they are worth, but its not like your gonna be spending thousands.

live a little

It's all a matter of personal opinion as already said.
If you've got the money to spend then go ahead, I've modded mine to make it individual but it will probably be the only car I go this far on.
Things like alloys (possibly) and stereo can always be taken off/out and put on the next one.

Well I have done some mods to mine, wheels, suspension, head unit, alarm, body kit to be fitted very soon and a stainless steel exhaust and rear lights.. All in all once finished it will have cost 5k, maybe a bit more, give or take a few quid.(Original estimate was 6k). I have however kept all the original parts so it can return to standard very quickly if I were to sell and it wasn't to peolpes tastes.

I think it all depends on how long you intend to keep the car for and how personal you want it to be. I think a well looked after standard Clio looks ace, but a subtle and tasteful modded one can look just as good in my opinion.

Like Dunc said, If you have the money and fancy somethng abit more personal to you, then by all means go for it. I certainly haven't regretted doing mine that's for sure.

Good luck with what you decide.

Not really, but depends what you mean by modifying really. Keep it simple, and don't spend thousands as you'll never get the money back when you sell. A few subtle mods to personalise the car, ie wheels, lowering etc won't be the end of the world, you can easy put that back to standard, or sell some things seperate, but big bodykits - no way.

  none :(
no not into bodykits etc...

i already have wheels, lowered suspension and exhaust etc i was thinkin maybe interior mods and new lights etc.

after reading posts tho i think i will just save my money as i want the new type r

thanks for ur help people

As I'm getting old now I think its probably better to just save up for the car you want in the first place. People who spent £10-20k on modifications for their clio/corsa/saxo etc are crazy and they should just buy a better car in the first place. However some people like to be different and as I spent thousands on my Impreza I can hardly critisize. Just don't do a lot of stuff that can't be returned to standard or you could lose value when you come to sell.

I've added wheels and lowered cars in the past before just because I wanted to and believed it made the car look better - which it did in my opinion. But as a buyer nowadays, personally, I'd never buy a modified car. Just my preference. I certainly wouln't pay anymore money for a modified car than a standard, in fact I'd offer less. Just my opinion...

Not worth it IMO either.

If you have the money to buy a car AND modify it....rather than spending half on the car and half on mods, just spend it all on a better car!

Ive spent over 9k on mine with styling paint etc.

At times it feels like a waste of money

BUT

When you park up at tesco on a normal shopping run and you get strangers staring at the car, commenting on it, pointing at it, wanting to talk to you about it etc etc it makes all the money spent well worth it.

In my opinion you cant put a price on the fantastic warm feeling it gives you when driving along in it and people stare at you like your a celebrity.

You dont do extreme modifying with your head you do it with your heart.

Depends on what you want from your car as to whether its worth modifying it.

Some cars get ruined by modifications but some good touches can really make it unique. Just don't expect to make any money over a standard car when you come to sell and anything too radical will narrow down the market for whose gonna buy it.

  RenaultSport clio 182
Like people have said on here already sublte mods that can be taken off when you come to sell the car are best.

Getting stared at as you drive by probably means that you've modified your car too much and you look like a t**t.

interesting theory ..........................NOT .
i'll justify my reply to the very nice v6 going past and doesn't look too modified but i'm cant stop starring as it roars up the road .:rasp:

Sometimes people stare at a car because they are intrigued by it rather than coz its too over the top.

Sometimes people stare because its a sh!tter. I stare at supercars because they look good and I would admire a car thats been well modified.

I also laugh at sheds with big tailpipes and look like they've done a ram raid on Halfords. lol

  Leon Cupra R 225
nope. after previous experiences I'd now say confidently that saving up for a faster / more rewarding car is a better option from the start. all imo ;)

  133/225/CLS AMG
But what about if you can't afford to spend the money on a faster car due to insurance and running costs, does it do any harm to spend some on the car you've got????

No harm in making a car 'better' in your own opinion, be it lowering, wheels, exhausts etc.

  182BG
to be honest its not worth it, but we all do it, i still can't understand why lol
if i go to sell the car i will always put it back to standard, as standard as i can get it anyway because most people, like me, look at a car and is put off by it being modified

Best thing to do it just spend half, save half (if you know what i mean) :)

  RenaultSport clio 182
Kullycliosport,Alex, I was being sarcy..... of course I was refering to people who had done a ram raid on Halfords as you put it.

In my opinion though most of the modified cars that I see on the road look like they have ram raided Halfords! I used to work with a guy from New Zealand who could never understand why the modified cars in this country where so sh*t, big body kits, spoilers etc and nothing under the bonnet. I've got a DVD of tuned cars from NZ and they certainly know their stuff.

I'm not too keen on the glue on bits, but a tad better power and handling is worth every penny. Don't do it if you're likely to moan about the cost or when something doesn't quite work out first time round. Have faith in the right company and you can't go wrong.

You wont get your money back thats for sure, Only cars i've seen that can ask a premuim over standard are ones like the cup on here a while back, that was fully track prepped, with the cage and everything, But even then with all that work, you wont get back the full price of changing it.

Once you have bonded a bodykit on, I can assure you it won't be coming off!!
