Is the Shiftlight the Bible for shifting?

  2002 Clio Sport 172
Hiya peeps,

I was just wondering whether the best time to shift up during the 1/4 mile is as soon as the shiftlight comes on, barely before, or slightly after? Any tips there?

Cheers,

I personally think it's slightly before, I take the shift light to mean I should've aready changed.

exactamundo! Doesn't it mean equivalent power can be achieved in a higher gear. and who can concentrate on that thing when giving it some?!

Indeed.

If your looking for the shift light in the 1st 2 gears, chances are, next thing you know, you've hit the limiter lol.

Easier in 3rd and 4th.:D

Not seen it in 5th:(

I normally shift at around 7k if I'm gunning it. 7250 if I'm trying (and failing) to keep up with an STi TypeUK.

My Gtech is set to to max out at 7200 when the LEDs start flashing hardcore.

I have only ever seen my shift light once, that was when I hit the limiter on the strip at pod .. lol

Same as Maz, i've only seen mine once when i was giving it beans on the bit of dual past Thorpe Park. It flashed up just before i crashed into the limiter in 3rd gear.

Yeah but you're a girl? A fit one TBH so that's ok.

It's not an optimum shift light its a "here comes the limiter you should have shifted by now you tw4t" light.

 I hate to admit it but yup, bl**dy limiter b4 I know it!

Will b shift slightly b4 on my next 1/4 mile then.

Cheers 4 the input. Yall r :star: 's

The light just comes on about 300rpm before the red lines its just a warning that the limiters approaching.

You realy need to get your car RR before you know the optimum chnage up and then work it out in my diesel its about 4.5k in first then down to 3.8k by 4th gear.

You want to try and stay in the top band of power as much as possible so whilct max power for me is at 4k taking it to 4.5k in first means when I change up I'm about 2.2k so more power on adverage then a 4k chnaging where I'd be at 2k.

6500 for me. Changing at the right time makes a huge difference, I can get the wheels spinning a little in second now, in the dry.

As said, the shift light is merely an indicator of incoming limiter.

Optimum shift moment is just before the limiter kicks in. ;)

i likeit when it starts flashing in 5th!

its like 'hey... i dont have anymore gears!!'

I said that when I tickled the limiter in 5th... The 182 is crying out for a 6th gear, just for economy and to turn the noise down on the motorway.

thats just clutch abuse lol i can make mine do that but i dont since wheelspin when launching it from junctions etc has cost me a gearbox before, be careful!

I get to charge right through the green light all the way to 7,800rpm in my 172!! AH its tough but you just have to do it now and then!!

I have been there and seen it flash like buggery then got slowed down by a mobile disco....

optimum shift is a fraction of a second before the limiter kicks in...peak power is virtually irrellevant on a 16v engine....you want to take it as close to the limiter as you can without hitting it.
Taking it to the peak power point is all good but do you think your car is just as fast in 3rd gear as it is in 2nd!?? No ....so use all the revs in the lower gear!

I'm confused.

I'm an atheist, I don't believe in the Bible, so if you say the shift light is "the Bible for shifting" am I supposed to believe it is or it isn't?

When I change on the light it seems to pull a lot harder in the next gear. Plus, isn't the light actually called the 'optimal gear shift light' in the manual.. I think the clue's in the title with this one guys.

^^ What Pecan said. I don't understand peoples comment sometimes; surely if you rev until you see the shiftlight, then that lands you in, or closer to the 5k sweet spot in the next gear, as opposed to 1k below the sweet spot by changing early?
