Yeh I got a new steering column on mine rather than welding. Feels so much better now, cost me £226 supplied and fitted. Never had it welded so cant comment on that. Sam
Though this play would be up/down or left/right play as in column coming from footwell to steering wheel rather than turning the wheel either side and having no change of direction till over 10 degree movement is made.
Will get it on axle stands to check everything underneath as have to do my pre winter checks anyway.
its just a pain in the arse to get the connection to the rack with the rubber gatair ibn teh way, defo easier wiht someone feeding it from inside the car.
As std the rack is suposed to have a small amoutn of play in it, so if you hit a bump etc to doesn't wrench the wheel, but if you are hardcore you don't need this and get it welded up, this gives a better feel of the road, just not so good for bumpy roads
Its definately loosened up over the last 6 months. With coilovers in the last 3 years I guss it has taken more abuse so seeing as the car is 10 years old in January will look at getting it done along with the rest of the bits needing restoring/replacing.
