Is there such a thing as a decent off-the-shelf surround-sound system?

I do really want surround sound, even if I can't afford a flat screen for a while, but there's such a selection of surround sound packages that I'm not sure what I'm looking at :eek: :S

I want loud (obviously) but not s**t quality or with no depth or control to the bass - would one of the off-the-shelf systems like you can buy in Argos or Empire Direct or whatever be any good?
Anyone got any recommendations?

I can't afford separates! lol I was thinking a budget up to about £300??

What do you want it for, your PC or tv?

I bought one ages ago for about 50 quid, blew the sub on it after 10 minutes lol

I could do with a new one for my PC with a really really bassy sub!

a bit of advice dont buy one that has the amp built into teh dvd player ! usually they have f**k all imputs and ashoddy dvd player

I got one form Asda for £60 about 7 years ago and it's only just packed in...fooking great it was! no joke, real loud and good quality too! Think it was Pacific or something. Could change all the levels of each speaker, two phone inputs (for say a TV and one for a Stero) and an optical input...was great..

I'm looking at either one of these two at the moment.

Need to have HDMI input for my Sky HD and these seem reasonable enough price wise too.

Can't say about sound quality, but with the power available I'm sure it'll be good enough.

either of those 2 would do if you just want cheap but effective

and atleast you can upgrade the speakers in a little while on those

You can attach the rear speakers to the top of your new chair!! Vrrrrmmmmmm :D

its very good for the money its just a shame onkyo dont really sell much over here but they are a well respected company i first got to notice them alot last year in dubai as it seems everywhere over there sells onkyo

Yeah I agree it's not upgradable. I suppose it depends on how many inputs he has. For his budget I would have thought getting seperate amp, dvd player and speakers that perform well together for under £300 to be difficult. Don't forget he'd have to factor in the cost of all his inter connects as well!

From my experience of using the above system it's the best all in one solution I've seen for it's price!.

i agree it will sound nice but as my mate found out with his all in one he cant plug his ps3 into it or his tv or sky so only has 5.1 from dvd's and that sucks :(

I do agree! If they can afford it they should go for an av reciever! They'll have greater flexibilty. The Denon kit gets very good reviews.

That pioneer has two inputs, one via scart and one via RCA, and I think it up mix's the external sources to 5.1 from stereo. The older version which I had had no HDMI but did have an optical input.

That first one you posted McBunny was recommended by the Rasclart as well - it looks good!

I guess it hasn't got a radio receiver though? unlike the second one.

A radio would be great actually as I haven't got one at the moment.

certainly worth more than spending 300 on a all in one system to then a year later go hmm it doesnt do what i want now then have to buy a better system then

is the avr1507 better quality than the avr1306?

I don't think I'm ever going to have 7.1 so it seems a waste to buy the 1507 on that basis alone! lol

Denon range are cracking. I used to have a Denon AV amp a little while ago. Just got rid of my Denon DVD player as well

Found the 1507 for £180, which means I could upgrade to the efx5.1 at £200 and come out at a similar price...

Though the mordant short Premier Plus ones are lovely and would go very nicely with the rest of the furniture lol

I guess it would come in under £500 if I went for the 1507 and the MS speakers, but I could only get the Premier set up with the dodgy 308 sub :(
