Is this true?

I went to a spray shop and this guy told me he couldnt colour code my car because the plastic on my bumpers ect, where the wrong sort of plastic and if he was to spray my bumpers the paint would flake off.

No he is right I think. You'd need to use a plastic primer to help it stick but even that won't be perfect. Just don't go near it with a pressure washer! ;)

no, they need sanded down due to being textured...but once this is done you can use high build primer and it wil be fine!

i done it myself on a bumper, and had a bodyshop colour code mine and its perfect!

as long as you sand it down and use plastic primer it is easily possible ...he probably couldn't be bothered

I think there is some truth in what they are saying, i seam to remember when the Ford Ka first cam out some problem with spraying the plastic arches that they originally had.

They probably just don't want to get involved as spraying bumpers can be a thankless task.

Hes talking b****cks all body shops will either have a universal plastic primer that will key to all plastics or they will have several different plastic primers for different plastics eg PU,PVC,ABS,PUR etc

Textured plastics dont need sanding down to remove texture they just need scotching with a red or grey scotch depending on how soft the plastic is

Most plastic primers are applied using just 1 medium coat then after 10 mins the primer will have key'd the plastic and you can then use a 2k high build primer, this will cover any texture that the bumpers will have.

You can also use a cleaner that you apply to the scotch to remove any mould release that the factory use (to stop the bumpers sticking to the moulds) before plastic priming.

The paint will flake off, its just a question of how long. If you look after it it'll last for ages. Mine flaked off but the fella at the bodyshop was nice enough to re-spray the flaked bits before I sold it :D

dont let it put you off. its just wear and tear. BUT a major factor is in the prep process, if you get a prepper who cant be arsed and just gives them a quick sanding and whacks a ton of primer on, they will flake, and they will flake in no time at all.

if you go somewhere that take pride in their work, and they really do, then it will be done properly and it*shouldnt* flake for years and years.

my old car was colour coded and sprayed never flaked and still hasnt yet.

as they say its in the prepper doing it.
all good bodyshops should be able to do this no probs
