itunes compatibility...?

basically I need to know if itunes download folder will work with any generic mp3/mp4 player or does it have to be an ipod? Quick response appreciated guys

The itunes FOLDER will be ok, but anything downloaded from itunes is mp4, not mp3, so only a player that plays mp4 (ie an ipod) will play them.
Plus all the files from itunes are protected.
