Jacking up rear?

Is it safe to jack up the car rear (182) using the centre of the rear axle (it looks a fairly meaty angle iron section)?

I knew this would lead to idduendos :)
My mechanic friend fitted my exhaust a week or so ago and jacked up in the centre of the rear axle before putting it on axle stands. I know the rear is light compared to the front but I grimaced a bit :(
He said don't worry. He knows his stuff but though I'd 'ask the experts' so as to speak.

i used an axle stand either side on the rear, was plenty sturdy enough and caused no damage:
