just downloaded and installed a facebook extension for my site but i dont know how to set it up.

It's only a few lines of code. What are you pissing about with plugins for?

Benefit to a plug in is that you don't have to hack any of the core code, so you can update easily or remove the plugin at a later date. But the plugin will simply be the FB code in a wrapper and made about 100x bigger lol.
