on well i tried jump starting my car with a mates the other day, and it caused his batter to set alight

positive, ive been told that theres a dead short somewhere as it killed my batter in 10 mins of putting it in

garage said its possibly the starter motor, how would i fault find this using a multimeter

2nd gear, clutch in, key to the on position, get mate to push like hell, dump the clutch and floor the gas

Get someone to push the car with you in the driving seat.
Turn the ignition on, when your moving a fair speed stick the car in 2nd gear drop the clutc it should be enough to turn the engine over and start it running.
