Just decided

  2004 1.2 Dynamique
Was gonna get something like a golf tdi or audi a3 tdi in february when I have saved up my money. Been quoted 600 quid on insurance and I will be 19 year old by that time and will have been driving 2 years.

But I have just decided that I am gonna get a 172 or 172cup, i'd rather have one of these and enjoy it rather than just get a golf or a3 just for the sake of cheap insurance. Just gone onto elephant and had a quote of 1800 quid, although thats for now and im only 18 so will probably come down a few hundred quid next feb when I will be 19 (19 in december).

Anyone else got 172's at a young age? If so what insurance company are you with and how much are you paying?

Is that pass plus then?

I was thinking about doing my pass pluss but only some insurance companys dedcut their prices for pass pluss so dunno if it will be worth it!

Defo gonna get one though I reckon I will be about to get insured for about 1500 pound

The insurance company will go in hard and dry if you claim or get rumbled. Not to mention the police, as you will be classed ass driving without valid insurance. Then theres the matter of paying for the damage to your car and the one you hit and any personal injury you may cause in the accident. Good luck eh.

as your mum is the main driver and your just the second driver for occasional use. i presume your mum probably won't be driving the car at all really. Your kinda swapping your roles around to get cheap insurance.

you can do it but you'll just have to live with your concious? (spelt wrong i know)

Im fully police pursuit trained (dont ask) and if you gonna be driving round with your mums policy as a named driver, you will get in the brown sticky stuff come accident time.

With named drivers in the policy schedule or statement fo facts there is usually a limitation of use for named drivers. Insurance companies are very wise to this, and if you have the vehicle registered in your name, then get your mum to insure it they wont pay out either. When you insure a vehiclt they have to ask you "are you the current owner and keeper of the vehicle". Any reply you give to that question forms part of your "contract" so to speak, and all calls are recorded nowadays. They will do all they can to wriggle out of coughing up so be warned! and you'll never get any no claims by being a tight arse all your life lol

I havent had a accident yet, touch wood.

How will I be driving without valid insurance?

Because you will have lied about who is the main driver to obtain cheaper cover. They class this as fraud/deception. The quote they give you is based on what they feel the risk someone poses is. Obviously a middle aged woman is less risk than a teenage boy and the cost of the policy reflects that. If you lie who is the main driver then you are doing so to get cover you wouldnt otherwise be allowed or afford to have. Insurers are hot on this and often send investigators round to ask neighbours who drives the car. Sometimes this is triggered by a claim other times simply becuase the car doesnt fit the 1st driver and seems more likely the second driver is the owner/driver. Also the car will have to be registered in your mums name.

Well when I first past my test and I was 17, I had the choice I could have paid 2k and insured it in my own name, on a 1.2 clio (I only paid 2k for the car so the insurance would have been as dear as the car)

But instead I paid 1089 and did it in my mums name and me as a named driver, all my mates have done it this way apart from 1, he paid 1600 quid on a 1 litre standard corsa it really is a fuckin joke!

So thats why I did it like that, gonna do this until I am 21 and then get my own insurance policy

My cousins boyfriend is 23 and he is still on his mums name and has a audi tt quattro he says hes gonna stay on his mums until he is 25

To be fair if I had n accident I wouldnt claim anyway, because....

1. My excess is 600 quid
2. If I did claim they would just add another couple of grand onto the insurance when I renewed it

well tbh i don't know what ur all talking about. i have had 3 claims on insurance all involving myself who is a named driver on my dads policy the car is registered in my name and never had a problem even once.

talking out your arse there mate. you are on about buying a £7000 odd car. at your age if you had a cup you would put it half way up a tree before xmas. And then you would wanna claim. your excess wont seem so bad when you lose a £7000 on a car, or even worse end up paying a finance company for the next three years.

i think you should get a cup, the more people like you that get them, the more exclusive they become!! lol

if you had an accident?? what if theres other people involved? they will want to claim.

either do it properly or wait until you can insure it. it aint worth the risk of being caught. fraud will get you blacklisted from everything, mortgages, mobile phone contracts, bank loans, credit cards etc.

Being a named driver and not the policy holder means when you finally get your own policy you'll be in your 20s and paying double what someone of the same age who has done things the honest way.

maybe getting a valver would be cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure? plus you would have great performance.

I had a Renault 5 turbo as my 1st car, insured in my name it cost me £1700. It hurts when you are young but i've built up no claims now. In the event of an accident i know my cover is valid, all costs will be covered by the insurance co and i wont get dragged down the cop shop.

what about a slightly bigger sized engined clio like a 1.4 or 1.6? still nippy and would be a lot quicker than your 1.2 joel

new shape one? they must be quite cheap to buy?

Can't believe you guys are such do-gooders.

You won't have any troubles being a named driver Joel - no1 can prove that your the main driver, so there's no risk

Insurance fraud rofl - they rip us off, what do you owe to them? And as for it being illegal - unless someone followed the car 24/7 for a long time, then it could never be proved.

I'm sure your view would change if you were hit by someone doing this who got caught out, especially if you were injured as a result. I know a lad who got rumbled scamming the insurance company he hit the side of a new M5 did 20K of damage to the car, destroyed his and the guy sued him for personal injury.

He had his licence taken off him and is still paying off the 50k debt his ended up with now and this was 5 years ago! Its effectively ended his life he never has any cash, cant afford a car, never goes out and almost all he earns goes to paying off the crash.

Exactly ripex

Seb - For slightly bigger engined clio it would be about 5k to buy roughly and can get a 172 for 6500-7000

300GT_PILOT - if you can find me a quote on a 106rallye for a grand in my own name I will give you a grand myself

Loony the point is I don't care what's happened to other people, if we all lived our lives thinking 'What If?' - we'd all be very dull.

It's hardly the shocking crime of the century that your all making it out to be. Also as I said above, there really is no way to be 'caught out' because it can't be proved that your only a named driver.

Some people on here are future old biddies with speed guns that we discussed on another topic.
