JUST JOINED - Need some alloy advice, please?

  Renault Clio Mk3 1.2
Hello, hello.

I don't know the first thing about making modifications to my car, but I've had my Mk3 Clio for just over a year and everyday I'm hating my hubcaps/wheel trims more and more. I've just replaced my front two tyres, so if I bought alloys, it wouldn't include new tyres.

So, who can give me any advice on getting some 15" alloys for my car.. preferably used ones as they are way cheaper? Do they need to be specifically manufactured to Renault? How easy is it to put my current tyres onto alloys?

Just throw some stuff at me and I'll try to soak up some knowledge. Thank you.

To answer your questions, the wheels will need to be the correct fitment for your car, you can't say "new alloys won't include tyres" as unless you buy alloys that take the exact same size tyres (slim chance) then you'll need tyres too.

As for insurance, the policy holder will have to declare fitting alloy wheels to the car, you will be charged for this, how much will depend upon your insurer.

Ah, crap - sorry dude, wasn't sure what I was doing. So if I were to buy some used, 15" Renault alloys, the likely chance of them fitting my tyres would be?

Okay, you got a guess of how much it would be? Second year driving as a named driver, but guess it'd have to be the main driver who makes the enquiry? Thanks for your response, by the way.

It's not just about them being Renault alloys, they need to be the correct offset (how far out/in they will sit), PCD (this is the amount of bolts and their spacing) and the centre bore.

If I had to guess I'd say that any alloys off a mk3 Clio, all engine variants bar the sport would fit your car no problem.

Just a quick point, in assuming the tyres your on. About are coming off your 15" steel wheels?
If this is the case they will be completely the wrong size as most alloys that are worth upgrading to come in 6-6.5" width whereas steel wheels tend to be 5" approx unless your after scoring scene points on a VAG forum with stretched tyres :)
Im suggesting 17"s if you have a mk3 unless you want to slam it and go euro look!
I'd look at Laguna wheels from the later models as some are quite similar to Clio 197 and 200 oe items. But do your research on center bore and pcd etc before you dive in. You will most probably get a set with decent tyres already fitted. If not you will have to source some from a supplier like Camskill then get them fitted, bear in mind garages/ tyre fitters can charge up to £25 per wheel to fit a tyres supplied by you!

Ohh jeez, really wishing I didn't spend £160 on a new pair of tyres now. Unless I can sell them for a decent price there won't be any point of sorting out some new alloys, as that would be a complete waste seeing as it doesn't look like I could use them. I'll look into this further by speaking to some garages/mechanics or something. Thanks for the help though.

I'm cringing even asking this, but does anyone know of any decent wheel trims? Ones that don't look chavy but don't also have a cheapo look to them?

I'd stick with what you've got until the tyres are worn and then you can replace the lot.

With regard to wheel trims, I'd stick with some OEM Renault ones. Any 15" ones will fit off any model. You can get some that even look similar to alloys.

I'd have a search on eBay for 'Renault wherl trims' for ideas.

Just out of interest, what size are your tyres, then we might be able to help you choose alloy size.

Thanks. Regarding the tyre size - 165/65R15. I don't even know why I don't have alloys, every other Clio i've seen of my age (2008) has alloyed wheels. Got it from a Renault dealership just over a year ago.

£165 on a pair of 15" tyres?!

Do a search in here for alloys on Mk3 clios. In fact, check out here for ideas: http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?359285-show-us-your-mk3-s&highlight=mk3+alloy

I've got Megane Nervasports (17") on mine now. Picked up a set on eBay for £100, got them powdercoated for £80, and got tyres (Nankang NS2's - roll on the haters!) for £160 fitted.

I just estimated the prices of the tyres alone, the actual prices I paid were: one tyre + tracking cost £91.50 so double that and it came to £183. Where'd you get your tyres from? I feel like I've been done over, big time.
