Just Snapped Me Cambelt

Guys from the looks of it, my cambelt has just snapped.

Was driving at about 4K when I lost complete power.

Spoken to a few peeps, wot sorta damage am i looking at.

Bent valves are gonna be one thing, wot else and how much am I looking to fix it?

Ian

Well harsh man, I feel for ya.. was only talking to someone at a meet yesterday about cambelts, as mine and his are borderline, and in desperate need of swapping!!

Looking at upwards of £1300+ for an engine rebuild probably

Now would be a good time for headwork etc!!!!!

Infinicar (Paul) might be able to tell ya..

Try e-mailing him?

Sorry to hear about it tho mate.. well gutted for ya :(

at 4k youve probably bent most of the valves and may have damaged the pistons, but only way to find out is by taking the head off. shouldnt think it would be as much as 1300 though more like £600-800.

Really at worst fecked pistons and valves. I can sell you a set of Second Hand pistons and you can source a second hand head for about £100, not really as bad as you think.

Cost a lot to replace the pistons, prob about £300, you could do yorself tho, its not hard.

Cheers, ill get back to ya

Might sound like a stupid question, but using second hand pistons is that just an accident waiting to happen?

Feel for you fella, it was me that was chatting with Riplash yesterday!

I have tried to book mine in but have been tod that mid to late Feb is possibly the earliest... Im on 63.5k and the original belt on a 1997 car!!!

I hope I make it to then! Thinking about it I may book it insomewhere else and get it over with!

Well the pistons have came out my engine, and are perfectly good, there is no problem with them, you will be totally fine replacing them.

And if your not sure id check it is the cam belt first, might be something else.

Just tried my local garage, they quoted me 4.8 hours labour on my 1.8 RSi... Are they sure?

Nick hill did mine plus the altenator belt in 2.5 hours. And that was mostly taken up with getting rusty bolts off. Give him a ring if your anywhere near. Otherwise just ring round as prices seem to vary alot.

Remove the covers yourself, thats what takes all the bloody time!

I stripped mine down (removed the covers, alt belt, etc) and my local garage charged me £15 to change the belt, fit a new tensioner etc..

Its not too bad a job, but you have to take the engine off a couple of mounts, took my engine out and put it back in within a week.

Would be willing to do it for you, but would charge.

two, three hundred labour + parts.

Thats stripping down the current head and checking valves, skimming head and fitting new gasket, rebuilding, which includes re-seating the valves.New valve stem oil seals. Checking the pistons for damage, if youve only lightly pitted a pistion you can usually get away without changing them!

Then you might have price of valves and how many??

I could send you a full descriptoin of wnat would need to be checked if you are interested.

Yeah if u can send me the details, ill appreciate it mate.

my MSN/E-mail is mailto:dj_illusion@hotmail.com">dj_illusion@hotmail.com

I was told each valve is about 4 quid?

Oh, where abouts are u based?

it says in the hand book every 72000 but you have to take into consideration the age of a belt, should be every 72000 or x number of years, mine gets changes every 3 years which is probably 30,000 roughly, never leave a belt on a car for longer than 5 years.

My oil and filter is changed every 6 months regardless of millage

72k or 5 years whichever is sooner

Mine is on 6 years this month! but only 40k since last change

the belt kit is £75 from euro or £95 from renault, but buy renault as its better tansioner bearings.

Labour £100-£200 could be alot more if they dont fancy it.

I would love to see Nick hill change one in 2hrs!

Is there anyone here that can do the job?

I know Red Valver offered, just seeing if theres anyone else closer to home? I live in Surrey
