I have just ordered K&N 57i induction kit for my 172, what do you guys reckon to these, those of you who have fitted one?

Comments appreciated...

Thanks Guys.

Generally accepted that they do nothing for your engine other than add noise, and in a lot of cases, you lose bhp.

On a hot summers day it's even worse due to the heat soak apparently.

I'm not talking from experience here though.

Hmm well i had one, and i took it off! Felt slower if anything and the noise did my head in.

I have one but took it to see if there was any difference, with the standard one on now it seems to pick up slightly better but sad there is no noise! :dapprove: when i get a change i'll do a noise test! :D

I had one of these on my 182 an took it off not long after having it due to it just making a noise an i did notice alot of power loss an not having a pick up at all, with it just being a filter in the engine bay an nothing to stop the heat from the engine getting to it.
If your able to put some kind of sheild between the engine and have enough ventilation going to it i think it would be ok but then for that amount of hassel you might aswell get a viper IK or a maxegon one.

The K&N will probably save me a few quid over the years not having to buy replcement standard airbox type paper filter. I suppose the standard filter will be more efficient being paper and enclosed in an air box. If I don't like the K&N
I'll just take it off and put the standard one back.

Which is the best way , try things and if you dont like it , you can always change back .
I quite like my pipercross viper but that's my own preference .

k+n cone filter for me in a custom made airbox with original air feeds .It needs finishing off , maybe larger air feeds when i can be bothered , lol. Sounds good , pulls well , no loss of power due to heat soak ;)

Filter was brand new and cost me £20 off ebay :)

had many k&n's in the past. They drove me mad, great at first but made my last car alot slower! Wont be doing that again!

I like what you have done there, the air box looks pretty professional, is it better than the standard set up and was it worth the hassle?

Thanks Mr Billyuk :)

^^^ Cheers .Yep , definitely worth the hassle , it needs the end fitting on the throttle body end to make it fully enclosed , just haven't had the time tbh . And it definitely hasn't lost any power or the 5k kick that the k+n apollo did when i had that fitted . When it gets a bit warmer and i can get my ass into gear i'll fit the end and "maybe " try out slightly larger air feeds , even though the standard air feeds seem to be ok .

The cone filter inside is just a bog standard cone filter but has a larger surface area than the standard panel , i don't know if this helps or not , whereas the k+n apollo filter i had before was a smaller surface area so i think it was starved of air imo .

i have had a 57i kit on mine for while now but have put it inside a standard mk2 ph1 air box . It work's fine and still has the little rumble . :D

That looks like an aluminium ITG Maxogen, nice. Should have made it out of carbon fibre ;)

If we lagged the steam pipes at work with carbon fibre i would have done , as we don't i had to accquire whatever was on hand ;)

  182 Full Fat
I’ve had a 57I K&N fitted on mine for over two years now. I bought it for the noise and was unaware of heat soak issues at the time I bought it. I have looked to improve cold air feeds, but on a recent rolling road trip the car put out the same power as a standard 182, so don’t expect any gains. Also as said above in the Summer months, the car may lose power. I may look to put air box back on in future, but leave my larger cold air feed loosely sitting next to the air box so I still get some induction roar! See here to see my cold air feeds, and where I had to remove the acoustic valve to fit the air feed

You will love the noise the 57i makes though!! ;)
