K-Tec Racing Clio 182 Championship

Anybody ever took part in this series? I may be able to get a sponsor from my company for next years races. Seems a pretty decent championship for an amateur?

I looked into it moving from mx5 racing to the clio 182 championship. Asking around you need a set of new tyres and a full set of discs and pads per weekend. 2 or 3 gearboxes a season. Lots of spare panels and doors. My race budget wasn't big enough so I stuck with mx5s.

Discs and pads each weekend? What is the allowed setup then?

Doesn't mention new discs and pads for each weekend in the rules, and tyres should be a minimum of something like 2mm it states. And surly a gearbox rebuild is only required when necessary. Dunno not really looked that far into it TBH.

I considered building a car as it says you can do one for £5k.

Bearing in mind there's £3k of standard, mandatory equipment in each car, before you've considered the stuff you need for the MSA blue book like an extinguisher and a roll cage... I can't see how.

You'll probably NEED new stuff, regardless of what the rules suggest.

You shouldn't need new pads though as pads are 'free' so if you use the right compound, they'll last longer than a weekend

come and join in the tricolore trophy, great club atmosphere and some cheap classes to run in.
cost me 4 grand all in to get racing then about 4 to 5 grand a year to race.

yeah you can make your brake pads and tyres last more than one weekend, but you wont be anywhere near the front.

Hasn't done me any harm in the Tricolore series over the last 2 or 3 seasons!
Russ
Would you say it's the same level of competitiveness though?

Like in mazdas I was 0.7 seconds off pole at brands and that put me 16th on the grid out of 35. A new set of tyres and brakes could have been the little extra I needed to get up there.

Fair play to you if you can do it on used hard wear.
Last season I had one set of tyres and one set of brakes and finished 16th out of over 90 drivers. It can be done.

HI
We raced in this series last year and some of the comments are quite wide of the mark.
Pads last up to 3 meetings using the K-Tek Carbon Lorraine pads which have the best feel of all, most are using these.
Tyres have changed this season from the Dunlops to Yokahama 048's, these last a lot longer and are more durable and are setting quicker lap times on average about 0.5sec. Friends using these this year are getting 2 meetings easily out of them (4 races and two qualifying) and they come in a just under 100 pound a tyre. They have been restricted to 18 for the whole season and are barcoded, most think they wont use anymore than 12-14, depends on track surface as croft and Rockingham eat tyres up. Last season yes some people were using brand new set almost every race especially on the front.
Disks last a whole season easily
Set up you can only change 3 things, tyre pressures, tracking and camber within the limits of the rules.
Gearbox will last a whole season if you don't miss and few shifts, otherwise take it out yourself and a local gearbox garage charged us 170 pounds.
Body panels well its close racing so expect a few dents and cracks, last season we had two wings and a front bumper all sourced from local breakers or ALS.
Cant race this year as looming divorce beckons so finances have been rained in otherwise we would still be out there.
Car is almost ready for sale and is fully compliant for this years regs apart from the tyres. Just about to put a newer lower mileage engine in it as the other let go on a recent track day.

I've pretty much finished building a car for the championship, not 100% sure if I'll end up using it as I've been discussing a drive in a different championship.

im selling my Clio 182 which is race prepared. few changes such as ECU and coilovers it would be ready for the Ktech series or its race ready to go tricore, trackday trophy, trackday championship, classic car tin top series plus more etc.
contact me if you want some info. its fully MSA ready, ive used for past two seasons in trackday trophy and been on the podium every round - I'd like to think that's down to me!!

board a work so I thought I add a few images of the car so far.

Need to order some race pads and finish fitting the fire extinguisher and then I think it almost done. In the back of my mind I'm hoping to enter it into the Victor meldrew Handicap race at brands hatch at the end of the month.

I've been keeping an eye on all the posts and info about the tricolour trophy series. It's something I'd seriously like to be a part of. I've got a PH1 I use on track days at the moment, with a few bits added it should go into production plus but I've been considering starting from scratch and entering production class. Are there any pros and cons? Making it to the grid next year might be a bit of a rush but like the idea of getting a car ready and sorted next year with the idea of competing the following year.

I've read up on the race fees which seem very resonable. Only question i have is what sort of budget for the year do people have in terms of spares and repairs? Guess its a how long is a piece of string senario but my man maths has concluded going from 1 track day a month to entering a series won't really cost much more....

I may be wrong

i have done production class for the last 2 years.
i work out cost for a race meeting at about 600 quid. so thats fees, fuel, accomadation, food and wear.
but thats for me and family and we normally stay the night before and after.

I see Robs comment above and he quotes £600 I have done it as cheap as I can and I run in production plus. Probably around an extra £100 on top of your race entry fee but I camp over at the events.

Yea that doesnt sound bad at all in terms of costs. I'm not very close to any of the races unfortunately I'm up in newcastle. I will see what I can do as going to one of the races and having a look around is something I really want to do

I have been speaking with mark fish about a safety devices cage, there was a cloud over them currently being MSA approved. I emailed safety devices to see if they could shed any light on it and this was their reply:

Hi mark,

Sadly, we do not manufacture a roll cage for the 172 Renault Clio that is MSA/FIA homologated. Our R016 and R017 roll cages were built to MSA spec. up to this year however the interpretation of the regulations are changing and these roll cages no longer fully comply top this. We are in the process of developing a new, bolt-in roll cage that will fully comply with regulations, this will be available from next year.

Should you need more information, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,

Lili

This being the case, other than the cage they are developing what would be the best route to go down for a MSA spec cage?
also will this effect people currently competing with one of these cages?

Custom cages weld in cage or have someone like @Tom Johnson off here make you a custom bolt in cage if it has to be bolt in

As for it effecting those with them already fitted who compete in MSA events, techincally yes it should/will. In reality it will depend on the scrutineer at each event

Ive got the offer of a fairly cheap safety devices cage which has just been test fitted but wanting to compete at some point it doesnt make sense to go for something that wont be suitable :/

FFS, no longer complies? Surely there must be some sort of accepted timeframe for those cages already installed (dated) before the date the reg changes became applicable?

Wonder if dash dodger part? Need to have a read of bluebook updates..

It is the front section that doesn't comply anymore due to the leg of the cage that is supposed to follow the A pillar. Hence safety devices designing a new front section
