Kent Cams - Inquiry from Argentina

Hi friends, it´s me Jorge 07 from Argentina again. Has any Williams´ owner a high performance kent camshaft built in in his car ?. I´ve browsed thru that page and some cams seem to be pretty cool. :)

Kent´s page boasts of the quality and performance increase, besides a large variety of models for fast road use, race and rally.

Since this company is english, I guess you know those guys !.

Cheers

The Kent Cams set no. RN2003 works fine... no rough idling and a nice power increase throghout the rev range...

Along with SS zorst, headwork (and cam springs), filter and remap I gained approx 35 BHP...

Working on a 2,1L conversion but this time using a Piper cam R16VBP285H as this cam setup is the last step before solid lifters. Always use vernier cam pulleys to fine adjust.

Cams help quite a fair amount when coupled with a decently modified head, but going only a tiny bit wilder really doesnt do the trick.....its a waste of money if you go for a mild profile.

Try piper they are a tad better with their profiles. Schrick or Cat cams are what i would stump for though.

verniers, indeed.....setting the timing correctly is vital.

surprisingly, the mild profiles run quite well on the std ecu.

Ben mate,

iv got kent fast roads in mine and verniers, but when the engine was built they were timed to manufacturers recommendations.

Car runs fine, but would i need to take it to a RR to get it setup, inc cam timing etc?

Cheers

you can still gian power by either advancing or retarding the cams slightly either way.......

although cams should all be identicle, they very slightly and each one will need the timing to be oh so slightly diff.

ah cool, so would it be done on a RR? I spoke to a guy local he said once the engines been built he will set it up on his RR for me. Do u reckon this would inc cam timings? might give him a bell tomorrow!

Both Kent and Piper do a couple of cam profiles that will fit the bill and can be used with hydraulic lifters. Like Ben says, its hardly worth the bother going for the slightly fast road grind in Piper terminology thats a a 270 cam, even though its more like 256 duration. Next step up is slightly wilder and as far as you can go with the hydraulics - a 285 (it was mentioned already above). The Kent profiles are roughly (and I *mean* only roughly) the same in terms of duration and lift - youll need to look at them and see if theyre what you want - but I seem to remember theyre called Sports and Sports R then theres a Supersports which again, is as far as you can go before needing solid lifters. Check this though as my memory is hazy.

Comparing the profiles of both the Kent and the Piper cams ive got, the Piper cams seems to have a profile (lumpier) I think/hope will aid a better filling of the cylinders.. It sort of looks more modern!? I choose a mild cam for my next project because i want to tourqe and not necessarily top end power...

So JORGE=07 Pick a cam that fits exactly your application!!

Dont bother with spending all that money and time setting up a mild cam that will do nothing. THe wilder ones work fine on the 2ltrs and you wont loose much torque, coupled with a properly cone cylinder head you can get gains all round.

Exactly - whats the point of swapping the cams if youre worrying about losing a little bit of torque down the bottom? Surely youre prepared for the trade-off? Although on my 16v the power increase on Piper 270 cams was not that great, it was noticeable, and to be honest there was so little torque to be had low down in the revs it didnt really matter if any was lost - because when I wanted to drive fast I always kept it on the boil!

Thanks for your reply. It seems that all of you got the hang of it and are serious about the matter.

As soon as things start looking up for me I´ll follow your advice and will have the Sport R Kent cams fitted in my Williams. Just while I think of it, Some guy at Kent told me that in case I chose the Sport R camshaft kit ( 20 BHP gain ;)instead of the milder 16 BHP Sport type) forged pistons should be a must, to guarantee duration of the engine.

Cheers
