knocking drive shaft-safe to take on track?

  535d / t5 caravelle
i have a knocking drive shaft, i have had the car into the garage, who have told me it is impossible to say which one it is in the current state, the only way to distinguish it, will be when it gets worse, it knocks when setting off on full lock, they have told me it is safe to drive and causes no hazard.

i am hoping to take the car on track on the 25th may, will it be safe to do so?

cheers

Main reason why a shaft knocks is lack of grease on the cv joint - IMO not safe to be driven in anger as worst case sinario is it breaks and locks up - actually happened to me with my first 172, had a split cv boot without realising, started knocking and I ignored it and it locked up on the way home one night.

You should be able to tell which one it is, stick it on full lock and listen to which direction you're turning the knocking is on

sorry forgot to mention the garage did re-grease the cv joint, but where convinced they could not tell which drive shaft it was, think i could be asking for trouble on track from what you say, may take it elsewhere for a second opinion .

Replace them both.

Last thing you want to do is throw a shaft, causing more damage and covering the track in gearbox oil.

Can you get another shaft/s before then mate? They are not very expensive from Renault

Nah, boilers just gone fucked at home lol, so need to sort that first, are they not £220 plus vat each?

Replace them both.

This is true! And sounds expensive:eek:

When shafts go, they 'can' make a right mess. I wouldn't risk it. Plus I wouldn't be all that confident driving something at pace Iknew had an issue.

Do not buy Euro Car Parts shafts tho!

The Qdrive ones they do or whatever they are called are a discrace to motoring.

Thanks for the advice everyone, taken on board! Might just bight the bullet and replace both and be done with it if there only 90 quid a piece. I'll get looking for price's, cheers :)

I didn't realise there was a difference between the cup/non-cup driveshafts. Do you know how they differ? (i.e. is it length or steel grade etc).

got a renault specialist breaker 5 mile away, £50 a shaft, might just go with that.
