Knocking noise under bonnet and no Air?

I have noticed a couple of recent problems over the last couple of days, and I am beginning to think the two are allied:

1. The fan for the heater/AC seems intermittent. All the buttons seem to work. However sometimes the fan comes on and all is OK... other times it isn't and no air circulates at all.

2. There is an intermittent knocking noise unde the bonnet, mainly noticeable on tickover and low revs, but may be present at higher revs. It is coming from the driver side.

Now, today I noticed the knocking noise goes when the fan isn't working, and returns when the fan is working?

So I assume the two are somehow linked. Any ideas what's wrong please?

the heater fan is under the windscreen on the drivers side so probly fan catching the casing.

Thanks, where is the fan exactly? under windscreen bonnet side?
