Knocking on full lock

I know this has been asked many times before but as it didnt concern me then, i didnt bother reading. iv searched and cant find any thing on it any more but..

My car makes a rather loud knocking noise, sometimes 2 knocks straight after each other when i have the car at full lock.

can any1 tell me what this is?
how to fix it?
is it dangerous?

any help is appreciated.

hope i'm not jumping in on alexm's question but i've a similar sounding noise, have replaced the top mounts (which has got rid of the 'groaning' noise) but still have knocking.

it's definitely coming from underneath the car (rack/arb/bottom arms/+) but will need to go up on ramps so that i've room to try and feel what it is. was hoping someone had a simple answer then!

alexm - have someone move your rack from lock to lock whilst you're laid down by the side of the car - if your knocking is coming from underneath, sounds as though you could have similar problems. if it's coming from the top mounts in the engine bay, you can replaced those for about £50+labour
