Knocking Sound - Gearbox or driveshafts?

  172 Phase 1 & 172 Ph
Right now i'm normally pretty good at self diagnosing problems but i'm struggling with this one.

Basically i'm getting a loud knock when changing gear or pressing the clutch when coming to a junction etc and its loud enough to be heard outside the car by pedestrians etc. The sound is very similar to that of a rwd car when the u/joints have play in the prop shaft where it clunks when your on and off the power.

My first thought's were that it would engine/gear box mount issues. But checked all those, got solid top mounts, polybushed dog mount etc and no problems solid, even tried rocking the engine by applying some revs in gear with the handbrake on and my dad looking into the bay and no movement at all and couldn't replicate the sound....

Could it be play in the driveshafts? how much play should there be in them? (will get it jacked up tonight to have a look)...or could it be play in the box itself?

Its a phase 2 172 btw..
