Knocking when first setting off...

For some reason, when I first start my car up and set off, it makes a 'clunk' noise.

Any ideas?

Whne engaging gear? My gearbox is very sloppy when cold.

well the gear is already engaged.

Say I'm sat in my car, I start it up, select first, take the handbrake off and just as I start moving it makes a big clunk noise!

Does it also do it in reverse or when changing gear?

I'd bet a bic mac and fries on it being the rear pads sticking, don't move when you take the handbrake off, then suddenly lets go when you move. Do you have a garage? Stick it in overnight, no handbrake just leave it in gear, if no noise the next day, sorted!

^Ah yes after re reading its probably that, mine does the same sometimes. You can normally tell as it holds the car back slightly till it releases.
