Knocking - when taking foot off the gas in 1st and 2nd gear.

Over the last week i have had to sit in allot of traffic and i have noticed that when i am in 1st or second gear driving in a straight line at about 5 - 20 Mph, if i slow my self down using the gears, i get a knocking noise which sounds like it is coming from the front of the car, maybe the right hand side wheel i am not sure. Has anyone come across this before, the car is 182 (both cups packs).

Any Advice would be great.

I have the same thing, like when you are taking your foot off the gas sharply, sounds like its coming from the steering racks somewhere, im having mine checked out

My 172 Cup did this (2 new mounts, gearbox pad,all joints checked 5 times by Reno...better but not solved) and my 182 Cup does it as well (not as bad).
This is what you'll hear from the dealer...."Yeah...thats right. They all do it.Its part of the cars make-up.Its to do with how good they are.Theres nothing to worry about. Its just lweiuwiwevgahgq;moeaiguoesybiigclai rytuitiugtiku\g j\ikug cilvugaiguhyi;evga;ivgoiuvg;iuvge;iugv;ieuvgekrvge"

There. That'll save you 20 trips to the dealer

Mine does it, most do from what I've experienced here. I've sat back and let Rallypug etc worry about, but I've never heard of a suitable fix so have never taken mine in.

I wouldn't bother taking it in, unless you want someone going out "testing" your car everytime you do.

My advice is if it gets no worse then wait until a few months before the warranty runs out and take it in...or the first service.Make them aware of it and see what they do.
I'm not sure if anyone has ever found a cure to this and l'd taken my 172 in 5 times without it being sorted. When My 182 has its first service l see if they can have a look

Here Andrew had the same problem with my car.Put it in to Reno and they replaced the strut mounts. They told me however that they had applied a modified part from original. This was seemingly a common problem.Just thought you would like to know.

That would be the engine mount then.....

Defo its the exhaust 'rubbing/knocking' the heat shield as the lower engine mount is fooked. Common problem apparently, K-tec sell a powerflex uprated rubber kit, but some say dont make no difference. I just bought one and its being fitted today whist in for a service so ill pass my views later?

Ooooo, old post.

Is this knocking on lift-off the same one as when you floor it in 1st gear and it sounds like something is banging? I remember mine used to bang when both flooring it in first and lifting-off in 1st/2nd.

If so, it can be fixed quickly and easily.

hello all

a quick update on my engine knocking noise:

i took it to wakes service centre in northallerton with all the comments and pictures from the forum and asked em to read it during the diagnoses.

they diagnosed it and said it was the exahust manifold that connects the engine to the exahust system is too tight and knackered. baring in mind i just had a new O ring replaced by kwikfit.

they said basically it is not allowing the engine to resongate properly which causes the knocking. so they ordered geunuine renault manifold with O ring the entire exaust fittiing. put it and fitted for £50.00.

he told me its cured so i turned on the car with the driver door open and i couldnt spot it anymore i thought great but clumsy. so i shut the dorr and ready to drive it and guess what the same ole knocing is there. i asked him to come back and i said no the knocking is still there and he assured me that the noise is gone, i said to him listen its still there. he said thats renault for ya the knocing is totally normal and all that BS. at the point i was pissed i said look the noise is still here and thats why i got it here, anyway long argument which basically didnt fix my problem.

i asked him to check my mounts and he said they are all fine. i took it stright to renault and basically spent a bit more time with it and i said to also check the engine mounts which they said they are all in prestine condition i only done 35k so they still in ace condition.

the senior technician agrees there definatly a noise here but can find the source so he took it in and put it on the ramp with someone in it to rev it.

he came back later to me and said its coming from the engine he can just barely hear it from the outside thecar but definatly inside.

he said let it get worse at least on tick over and than briong it back. he said something about a small petrol flab inside the engine that could be causing it.

anyway pissed off at that point, so pissed iwas stalling the car every 20mins on the road.

Guys i need help with this, idont have the tools or expertise and every mechanic is trying to rip me off or talk BS, if anyone can help me with this i would be very greatful and would make it worth your while (no sexual favors lol) but if anyone can resolve this for me id be very greatfull.

or if anyone knows a reanault clio expert that knows about these issues and knows hoe to resolve em just let me know their contact details.

this sounds stupid, but its something you can do yourself with a socket set and some spanners.
jack the car up, get under it, and put a spanner on all the subframe, suspension mounting, engine mounting, basically every bolt you can find check its tight.
things like that can cause the sort of noise you have.
i had a private job i did a freelander it had a terrible knock from the rear end of the car - these cars suffer with rear diff bushes so was quite disapointed to get the car up and find it wasnt that.
i spent about 10 minutes looking for this noise and in the end i couldnt decide where it was coming from so asked my boss for a second oppinion, he thought it was lower control arm bushes which i changed, noise was still there.
then by accident i noticed that the noise didnt happen if i held the subframe to bounce the car up and down - one of the subframe bolts was lose. 1/4 of a turn and noise gone.

hi ditz

i noticed you got the same car as my self, have you experinced this noise as well as a like a rumbling noise wehn you move off or change gears or go over a bump.

i got both the rumbling noise and the constant knocking noise between 1000 and 1250 rpm if you get it to a constant 1250rpm that knocking noise is always there anything more and its gone.

any ideas on how to fix this please mate.

meery xmas :)

thanks

to be honest no, try to narrow down what this noise is actually coming from.
its quite easy to narrow down yourself- from what you are saying its an engine noise.
couple of things you can do.
does it still make this noise just sitting still revving at 1250? if so that instantly rules out suspension, clutch, mounts, gbox etc etc
if you find its still doing it with it stationary you can then try to narrow down what it is by turning things like aircon off. lights on to load alternator etc.
go through logically like that with it moving and stationary and you can normally sus what area the noise is from

hi ditz

yes the noise is there when its sitting at 1250 rpm. i agree to that. i like how everyone just balmes the mounts and the exaust stright way at kwick fot and other centres.

yes it does it sationary, the thing is thought when you first start the car its not there after it heats up and show 2 bars on the heat meter than the noise is there.

at renaults we turned the ac on, the mechanic moved the enige around and tried a couple of other things, he put it down to something internal some thing to do with fuel flap. he said to leave till iut gets worse to the point is there on tick over which it never is.

the noise is there when its 2 bars up and on 1000 to 1250 rpm.

than on moving off changing the 2nd gear the rumbling noise comes on.

you live near the north east by anychance mate.

thanks

just from hearing that i would say its exhaust related - possibly cat..
things expand when they get hot and frees things up to vibrate.
get the car hot (stick a glove of some sort of wrap a towel round your hand) and lean under the car and give it a whack see if you can get any sort of noise out of it.
im in essex mate

another update

i tried 3 other mechanichs incluyding another renault dealers and said they cant hear it and thats normal answers.

the renault dealers said it could be a loose trim and they need to look it in more detail which will cost me an hours labour £70.50.

guys if anyone can help or suggest anyone or anything that would be great.

by the way they said no to engine mounts and cv joints beign an issue.

anyone know if its possible to extended the warrenty when is just finished?

Thanks

check all your wheel bolts are tight ....sounds daft but it makes a knocking noise if 2 of the four bolts are a bit loose!

will do, the knocking comes on when the car is warmed up slightly, in the cold it takes longer for it to start.

basicaly when its cold the knocks are hardly there, when the car is warm than the knocks are back or there from the point i drive the car. is annoying me and considering getting rid of it now as much as i like it. i cant bare the knocking and all that rumbling.

hello alll

final update on this matter:

took it to the dealers and found the fault after all this hassle, it was the carbon canistar and all and all cost me £199.70 inc parts and labour. noise gone

also they did a rear breaks service in which fixed some hand breaks issues and must say is better now that cost me £76.38

on the invoice there is part called absorb vapour ess - quanity 1 = £39.08

no idea what this is, i wanted to talk to the mechanic but he went home typical. till i speak to him can anyone give me an insight about the part and the rear break service and are the prices reasonable tbh i,m not sure i know i nearly fainted when he told me it but i just want it sorted.

thanks everyone
