Lack of a 5k kick. Normal?

no, the inlet (dephaser) pulley shifts the timing

there isn't two lobes for each valve like in one of the videos above.

thanks foxy. will have to do a bit more looking. can't visualise how it works. Does it just slow down the inlet cam?

the first part of the video you posted explains it perfectly, the inlet pulley changes its own position on the inlet camshaft by a set amount of degrees.

This is done by the solenoid on the top left/cambelt end of the rocker cover. Its oil/hydraulic powered.

ah right, so as the pressure increases, inside the pully moves further down the cog type end of the inlet camshaft reducing the rotation speed and hense increasing inlet. If that makes sense. Sort of like gearing in a way

sort of. not *exactly* like the illustration, but..

the center part of the dephaser pulley is solidly bolted to the end of the camshaft. the 'outer' part of the dephaser pulley can move (the part with the teeth for the cambelt).

This moves when oil pressure to the pulley increases, which happens when the solenoid (on top of the rocker cover) is activated.
