Howdy

Gf's laptop has developed a fault on start up, shows this message on start up

Not the best I know..... probably wants binning, however we are not CS high rollers.

Pressing F2, boots up ok. This only happens after not using it for a day. Now as I understand there is a battery to hold time/date etc, do we think it might just be this?

Any help appreciated :)

This CMOS battery like a watch battery? We have a similar thing for holding data in NVM on alarm systems

*yeah tried changing time/date before, just defaults back to this after a day

* ah googled it, so not like a watch battery then!

Defo the battery on the motherboard.

Cheap and easy fix. Get this on some of the old servers at work running legacy programs!

Cool beans!

Right found it in the laptop, nice and easy, right under a cover. So as it looks like the one in the link above, am I best buying one pre made, or can I butcher one up? I can use a soldering iron, is anything stopping me getting the right cell, and soldering on the wires off the original lead, tape it up, jobs a goodun???

:)

sod paying £10 for a battery the size of a pound coin
