Am I right in thinking it should be one thick coat of laquer to get a nice glossy finish?

I find one or two decent coats, thick as poss, works best for me. With thin coats it comes out dull, i have found. Make sure you give it a good polish up afterwards. (let it really harden up for a long long time)

Yep one or 2 thick coats gets a good glossy finish without the need of polishing till your fingers bleed!!!!

Just watch out for runs mate and use a tack cloth before applying lacquer to get rid of fine particles.

And yes leave to dry and harden for a good couple of days before applying any resins.
